Also, Musk wants a carbon tax

Musk also wholeheartedly believes in global warming.

So, you would stifle his intellect because of his politics?

The Model S is definitely a badass car. Anybody who says otherwise hasn’t driven one.

I would rather that businesses not be at the taxpayer money trough.
Why put the financial risk on the taxpayer at all?

Hmmmm. I made two assumptions that gave the same result, half the distance (a guess) and double the time, link up plus link down...

Thank God Kelly Johnson never took tax money or people would be excoriating him for that!

So he can get a man to Mars, but not to the 18th green?

a few days before that, a couple of teenagers burned to death.

I think the Pinto got a bad rap.

I watched as the dealership installed the mandated fix to my Pinto: a plastic sheet with the outer dimensions of a keyboard. I'd want to know the speed/circumstances wrt that photo. There is a lot of plastic (to burn) in modern cars.

I think he’s much like a lot of other big businessmen, Trump included- if the government dollars are available, he’s going to avail himself of them since the competition is going to. It obviously would be better if big brother didn’t choose winners and losers. At least he’s doing intersting things. FYI, I’m NO ONE’S acolyte, I just loath the kind of writers who criticize people who actually DO things.

Exactly. Trump has declared bankruptcy how many times?

Tesla worked with George Westinghouse to develop the multi-phase powerhouse facility at Niagara Falls, the HV transformers and transmission line which delivered the power initially to Buffalo, and eventually supplied New York City upon project completion.

No, Musk isn't proposing to build a bridge between the sun and the nearest star (that project is no doubt still in the planning stages). Instead, Starlink involves launching over 4,000 satellites in order to provide satellite-based broadband internet access to the entire planet (that's Earth, in case you've lost track).

Our Doves, which make up the world’s largest constellation of Earth-imaging satellites, “line scan” the planet to image the entire Earth daily. We launch new satellites into orbit every three or four months.   https://www.planet.com/company/approach/

Operating one satellite is a challenge. Operating two hundred is unprecedented.

With 175+ satellites in orbit...

‘Tis only about 45,000 miles round trip.

About .25 second

Tesla was the better inventor.

Other than transmission of power by AC; what other Tesla inventions do we use today?

I know the idea is to swap out a battery at given spots along major highways to make “refueling” comparable time wise to getting gas.

That would be a mighty big storage facility!

And the POWER flowing into it would be ENORMUS!

How close together were pony express stations? Where a rider could get freshly fueled HORSEPOWER.

"Musk isn’t himself a company. He’s just real good at talking himself into getting and spending taxpayer money. And, guess what, were any businesses worth the effort they could do if by lining up this amazing resource called “investors” to take on the risk instead of taxpayers. Amazing concept."

Are you under the impression that Tesla isn't publicly traded? It is.

SpaceX is not so far, but is edging towards profitability. Musk has also invested large sums of his own money in the company.

The government money that Musk has secured for his various ventures has mostly been in the form of guaranteed loans, which he has largely already paid back as I understand it.

He's providing a lot of value for the investment, as opposed to Solyndra and various other boondoggles where the government wastes money.

“I’d love to see Tesla’s wireless power, but it didn’t ever happen.

Yet.”

It won’t, due to the simple physics of its inefficiency.

Distributed solar power is fine, but I’m still waiting for distributed high-density power in the form of LENR or fusion. ;-)

Flying cars for everyone!
