Cats to me are the most precious animals on the planet—after MS-13 gang members, of course.
But if this is done humanely and simply using infected cats available elsewhere doesn’t work for the science, I am okay with it. Maybe that comes from my upbringing on a farm.
Heart breaking! We just adopted the cutest, most adorable kittens in March. They were 3 months old. They are so sweet, cuddly, loving, trusting, and entertaining! Our two elderly cats are learning to accept them. Our really old elderly cats passed away in the past two years, they were 18 and 19 years old. We were out of the country for 11 days, just got back from London Monday night. Our son baby sat the cats for us. He adopted the brother of our baby girls! Puppies and kittens are so sweet!
The age at which USDA kills them.
We had a cat who lived to 19, and our current cat is a rescue.
Kittens are not so plentiful! After our cat Stinky, who was almost 20 years old, passed away a year or so ago, we tried everywhere to find a tabby that looked like her. She was with us for so long, we really missed her. I would find a kitten online and call but they were always already adopted out. Finally our son adopted a male cat and there were two sisters. We adopted them.
We had to drive 4 hours to meet with the Humane Society rep. to pick up the kitties. The Humane Soc. rep said that her branch of SPCA is members with some other state, can’t remember which one, Wisc., Minn.,?
who has no stray cats for adoption. So some are sent to that state.
We adopted our first stray cat in 1972. Gretchen. She was so beautiful and sweet and gentle!
All of our cats were rescue, except Bobo and Jasmine. We bought him from a local breeder who only breeds a few every year and she keeps the ones who don’t sell. Jasmine was kind of a resuce, bought her at Humane Society in Houston. She passed last year at age 18.
The two, other than the new kitties, are Wyck who just turned 11, and Jezabelle who just turned 9. Guessing at their ages.
Wyck showed up at MY BACK DOOR after Hurricane Ike. After big storms unwanted pets get dumped. I guess the owners couldn’t take their pets to their new digs.
Jezabelle was a pregnant stray at a Mexican restaurant. Her babies were dead and our vet had to do an emergency C Section to remove them. It was touch and go back in April 2010, but she is beautiful, sweet, loving~!
Wyck adores me. Jez adores my husband. They know who butters their bread!
I hate abortion, too! So sad and evil!
I care a lot about cats. Where’s the evidence to support the accusation of cruelty?
Almost any pharmaceutical that saves human lives and suffering (and Animal lives/suffering as well) is developed through animal research.
We have had an Animal Welfare Act since the 1960s. It involves strict guidelines as to how animals like cats are used in research and a great deal of oversight.
Before our Zelda, we had a brother and sister, Willie and Maggie, from the same litter. They were two of nine. Willie was a genius cat. He was very much my wife’s boy, and Maggie was my girl.
You don’t think breeding them just to kill them is cruel?
I would need to know more to have that opinion.
A research animal model needs to be consistent, among other qualities that may be specific to the study. This is why they are bred specifically for research.
The kittens are infected with toxoplasmosis which is believed to be responsible for some cases of schizophrenia in teens, can injure human fetuses and kill people with impaired immune systems. This disease should be studied much more than it is.
LOL what would the chinese do?
I wasnt aware of this. This is monstrous, cruel and inhumane.
This sounds like the barbaric cruelty that Koreans commit against innocent animals.
No, actually it isn't. I am sure that all that can be done is done to avoid suffering on the part of the kittens.
Unless you are a strict vegan, these kittens probably enjoyed a much better life and easier death than any of the agricultural animals whose products you eat every day.
In my life I’ve had a dozen cats, including the one who lives with us now. I’ve loved every one of them, and that final trip to the vet is always a stab in the heart — every time. But I take care that my cats don’t suffer when it’s their time, and lacking evidence to the contrary I’m confident the cats used in these experiments didn’t suffer either.
Well, my point is that the vast majority of animals used in research are rodents, specifically mice; but humans subjectively place different values on different animals. I don’t necessarily think that’s “wrong” - I personally couldn’t eat a horse, cat, dog, or even the rabbit my husband cooked last night. But I also, subjectively, find animal research to be a very different matter; and I know how animals are treated in modern research facilities, and the regulations and guidelines that have to be followed.
This article is kind of silly; the way it’s presented - including the ‘artist’s representation’ at the site - isn’t much different from many of the tricks that some of the animal rights people use to make it seem as though things are taking place which are NOT taking place.
