“IIRC the eastern timber rattler is a protected species, so he saved himself a lot of money by calling the fisheries and wildlife authorities.”
Protecting a rattlesnake...crazy.
“IIRC the eastern timber rattler is a protected species...”
Protected or not, Mr Rattlesnake comes near me and he gets a hello from Mr 12 Gauge.
If, that is, he successfully avoids the numerous black snakes around here. They stay until they start hanging around the house.

Good "snattlerake"... '-)
Big deal! I lifted my hood today and Trump had stuffed four immigrant children in there!
At least that would be a somewhat less dangerous snake to remove than a rattler, unless that snake grabbed the removal technician and managed to wrap itself around the technician’s neck. Moral of the story: when dealing with a herp that can kill you, know what you’re doing and have backup.
I think I’d have done what he did, law or no law. A rattlesnake bite is pure hell, since it dissolves the victim’s flesh. If he’d tried to shoot the snake, he might have done a lot more damage to his vehicle than the snake. Let the pros do a dangerous job like that.
