NYT is trying to distract from their unethical reporting by putting the reporter in a position to continue her unethical reporting. They aren’t trying to fix the problem by firing her.

If they thought she was done sleeping with sources they could leave her in DC. But they didn’t. There are plenty of sources to sleep with in New York. No doubt a few can make up dirt on Trump in exchange for her services. And she can fly to DC every now and then to do what NYT wants from her.
