Yes, but they didn’t have all the wonderful things available to them that our leaders today do. Our leaders today seem unable to grasp that we have excellent resources that have become available since the 1800s.

If you didn’t know better you’d think some of our leaders still live in caves, and never had an education equal to the third grade.

Build more windmills. Collect more unicorn farts.

Watch for Maxine Pelosi to calculate that if they cut California in thirds then it will cut electric usage by a third.

Rancho Seco is now 2 small radwaste storage buildings and non-functional cooling towers, which couldn’t be brought down per the FAA since they continue to serve as navigational aids in the flatland of the Sac valley.

Send you appreciation to the SMUD customers for their “forward-thinking” votes in 1989.

Future post to comment upon the 2500 megawatts that got deleted from the CA grid at San Onofre.

I think that’s a reasoned statement.

Sadly some of them dedicate themselves to tapping the government till.

Perhaps a few good projects will actually get done.

Despite the pathetic leadership in Sacramento.

The Solar Farms had and have nothing to do with our electricity usage, they were setup for the Military and their brand new Meteor Cannon out in the Nevada Desert.

Places that use lots of AC in the summer are one of the good applications for home based solar. Solar will never be more than a small part of the overall power, but it gets the most electricity right when you need it for AC and takes the strain off the grid.

Of course it’s still a dumb idea. It will help California the same way a Pay Day Loan helps the lendee.

Not really. You're not borrowing electricity, you're making more. A better analogy is getting a 2nd part time job to pay some extra expenses that crop up.

Easy math.
Load+contingency reserve (loss of the single largest resource) must be less than total resources.

Several weeks ago I rode my mo-ped six miles one way up hill to see my parents in 113 degree heat.

Man, have you got it easy. If I want to visit my parents, it's uphill both ways ...

well IF the demand gets near 50k megs, we’ll know. Like I said, it rarely gets above 40K and if you look at the Available MW, its over 50k +.

currently the demand is at 46k mw. with 53k available. If some plants kick off line because of HT shutdown, or throttle back the load for cooling, then Ca MAY have a problem. The air conditioners are running at full load in SF to keep the poop smell from the streets, out of the houses.

when you close coal plants...

23 Jul: Houston Public Media: Texas Grid’s Big ‘Test’ Could Last Beyond The Heat Wave
The state is breaking records for electricity use at a time when power reserves have dropped.
by Travis Bubenik
The strain stems from the fact that Texas currently has low power reserves, mostly thanks to three coal plants shutting down this year…

Charles McConnell, head of Rice University’s Energy and Environment Initiative, worries the state has gotten “dangerously close” to brownouts…

20 Jul: Houston Public Media:Texas Is Using A Record Amount Of Electricity; Could Demand Outpace Supply?
“We fully expect to keep hitting new demand records as summer 2018 continues,” ERCOT said in a statement on Wednesday. It predicted as much in March, when it warned that delayed power supply projects and the closure of three major coal-fired power plants would contribute to “tight operating reserves” and sky-high power prices at times…

don’t depend on “unreliables” either:

18 Jul: Daily Mail: UK’s turbines producing 40% less electricity as winds ‘disappear’ for six weeks across the UK causing record low electricity production

yes, and tomorrow in Ca it will be close with a projected demand of 49.4k mw, and the availability hovering around 52-54k mw. If a few providers don’t come up on line, or they dump the load because of issues, they will have brown outs. The grid is designed to provide areas of isolation as to prevent places such as hospitals and worthless F#%kin Government offices uninterrupted power. As for the rest of us.......

Well, it’s up-hill part way both ways for me too.

The last block of my return home is very steep.

“prepared for blackouts “

This is the ultimate stupidity I try to point out to eco folks who somehow believe the green energy is a viable solution.

These can only meet about 10% of the demand. Even if you want to be generous and say it’s 20%, that would be like only having power 6 days a month. And that’s not just at your house, but applies to gas stations, stores, traffic signals, etc. so don’t plan on going anywhere.

And watch how folks howl when power is out for a week because of a storm!

That analogy works too.

My point wasn’t that it’s about borrowing. My point was that you get what you need now but it will cost you later. It’s only a temporary fix - which is why your analogy works too.
