Okay, you are right. We should just go ahead and not fight, submit to the Chinese, let them charge taxes on our products unanswered, let them de-industralize us completely, surrender and learn to speak Chinese.
And as for paying higher prices, all those hundreds of thousands of men who lost their lives fighting for this country, and that was the ultimate high price for them, were just suckers.
What about $12 billion in emergency aid to build a freaking wall?
What should happen is no subsidy and the price of food would go down and the DOMESTIC demand for US ag products would increase. We would then need to import less from other countries. Tariffs are a good idea subsidies not so much.

I completely understand that. My point is that for countries like Canada, who apply tariffs to protect incapable industries within their country, we should be utilizing our superior ability to produce and sell goods and commodities and put the hurt on them. We don’t say produce as much wheat or corn as we could, because it would ‘’hurt” Canada’s production of those same commodities (the buzz word used most often is creating market “instabilities”). Our “reward” is protectionist tariffs on dairy products that they evidently need but can’t seem to produce enough to satisfy their own internal demand. My guess is that Canada’s dairy farmers have Ottawa by the short hair. I’m saying we should tell Canada that we are going to increase our production of those commodities where we are competitors, thus driving down our costs and selling them on the world market at prices they probably won’t be able to meet profitably, unless they drop their protectionist tariffs on stuff they buy from us. I am sure, that there are hungry people around the globe that would like to buy cheaper commodities than they are able to buy from Canada, and we’re going to help that process. Canada, like most of the rest of the world likes to “have it their way,” at our expense. Those days should be over!
This shows how inept the Republicans are in all things trade. Tariffs are great for 20 million manufacturing workers and subsidies help 1 million (or less) farmers) who would hardly be affected by the Chinese tariff anyway. This is bad advice the President is getting.
The reason why the Republicans struggle to gain a majority is because a tiny sliver of the electorate, Free Traitor™ globalists ( Bushies ), dominate the leadership of the party. Until they get the axe, the Republicans will always struggle, when they shouldn't have to.

This is all really curious. The Chinese import 30% of the world’s soybean production and the US is it’s biggest supplier. Did the Chinese get this all wrong? The price of soybeans in China will skyrocket because US farmers won’t export having to net out the tariff.
The Chinese have a losing hand here. The tariffs the US collects on Chinese goods could easily offset the tariffs China charges US producers. It’s a heads I win, tails you lose situation between the US and China on the battle of tariffs.
The reason for subsidies are to keep the agricultural sector healthy and profitable.
We can’t push down prices without harming those producing the commodities’ prices here as well as Canada.
As to your comment about Hungary people around the world, there is certainly no shortage but when we step in and give away free food it may do more harm than good since it would retard the native agriculture’s development
Tariffs are great for SOME workers and harm other workers. At least you now admit that.
There is no question that these are POLITICAL tariffs, not for the economy. They are working politically but the farmers’ plight clearly shows the negative economic side.
Trump wants to get rid of them because he understands their damage. He is looking for the long run with low or no tariffs distorting international trade.

This tariff has no effect on exports other than the reduction through retaliation if that even occurs. These subsidies are aimed at those effects of less wheat, soy beans, etc. purchased by China.
If China were to reduce or eliminate their tariffs it would make food much cheaper, at least a quarter of the price would disappear.

Subsidies and tariffs go together. A government subsidizes a product and protects it’s investment with tariffs. Every government does that and a skewed, ineffective economy results for all.
Tariffs are good only when they’re needed for sound economic reasons.

As I have said tariffs are good political instruments but damage the economy overall.
Trump is using the issue effectively from a political viewpoint.
Subsidies with tariffs are highly protectionist particularly if the subsidies are to be paid from the tariffs.

That would be nice. But since the tariffs were placed on Canadian lumber a year ago, the monthly composite price has gone from $398 in June 2017 to $564 in June 2018. Instead of coming down over time prices have moved higher each month.

If American mills could sell their lumber to Canada without the current Canadian tariffs, maybe American lumber would be cheaper domestically and we wouldn’t need to import all that expensive (Chinese via Canada) lumber?
I remember long ago when tarrifs were used to raise revenue for the federal government and there were no income taxes....now the piggy gets to double dip both...how times have changed
Bush himself imposed considerable tariffs which damaged the economy and helped the Democrats - particularly helped Landrieu win re-election in Louisiana in 2002. He had to repeal them after jobs continued to be lost as a result and they became increasingly politically untenable to maintain. That is reality.
He’s using tariffs wisely economically too. Precisely because he is only using them to change the global economic order to something more sane.
They’re also propitious at this time in foreign affairs. China is overextended IMO.
