The randomness of the attack, the rumored meeting of a white supremacy group in Oakland, and the races of a black victim and alleged white perpetrator all carried the trappings of a hate crime.

There's a simple solution to this sort of thing. Let's get rid of the ambiguity. The law should stipulate that ALL interracial crimes shall henceforth be deemed hate crimes, with fearsome mandatory penalties. Problem solved.

One of the (white) perps stated his animosity towards blacks stemmed from being repeatedly raped by them in in prison.

Guy was an ex-convict. My guess is that he perceived some slight from them on the train. Maybe he made some crass comment about her looks, and she rejected his advances, and he did was ex-felons do, “defended his honor” by killing her in what the police call “a prison-style attack”.

Once you are a convict who went through prison, who knows what you came to believe as you joined some gang and learned the ropes on how to be a life-long criminal.
