Lots is protectionist countries never became great. Argentina is an example.Argentina was the 7th largest economy for while. It wasn't protectionism that brought them down. It was Peron and socialism.

A no-tariff environment is the best, most people agree. If given a choice most would sack the income tax and go to a combo tariff/NSRT. But we don't ever get that choice.

I just read an article here yesterday stating the 10% and 2.5% figures on vehicles.
What aren’t you telling me?

Remember, "protecting" domestic industry by tariffs means higher prices for consumers. If you really like protective tariffs, why not go for total autarky, i.e. import nothing and make everything domestically, regardless of how much it costs the consumer. After all, autarky is the logical extension of raising the price of foreign goods by tariffs.

all pickup trucks not made in America get a 25% tariff. EU won’t lower anything unless that goes away. It’s the “Chicken Tax”

Just because European carmakers say they'll never design and manufacture a pickup truck exclusively for the U.S. market doesn't mean they aren't thinking about it.(From 2005)

After all, autarky is the logical extension of raising the price of foreign goods by tariffs. This is so ignorant on so many levels I don't know where to begin.
The prices of imported goods will be higher, post tariff. Much higher at first them lower later on as domestic supplies kick in. The higher cost will be the difference in US labor/regs minus cheaper shipping costs. I'd estimate 5-7% higher. But quality will go up too. Yes, the one time inflation is worth it to me and a lot of other patriots.
As you have been told before: only a fool plies a static economic model to a dynamic situation.

I asked you what you weren’t telling me.
The Chicken tax was levied after France and West Germany raised tariffs on our poultry. Johnson negotiated with them for 18 months trying to make headway, and finally in 1964 levied the tariffs after he had had enough.
We did not just out of the blue levy those tariffs against them.

Whew!!!!
LOL
I’ve always marveled at the number of VW buses that were sold in this nation.
I have seen so many of them on the side of the road in my lifetime. Even after that was known, people still marched up to fork over their shekels for one.
