You’ve never heard of burning bushes in the desert?
Seriously, tho, it’s remarkable how many pokey, sticky, thorny, obnoxious types of brush grows in the high and low desert, not to mention sage and creosote. It burns fast and hot and the embers go airborne which is why brush fires spread so fast. We’re at 1800ft at the top of the hill with about 100 acres downhill of sage and scrub off the back fence, so the biggest danger here is wind change bringing hot ash to us.
Same with Colorado. We have tons of beetle kill that of course cant be logged out just waiting to explode.....
It’s Trump’s fault. Trump and those damned SUVs.
Womyn and minorities will be hardest hit.
Looks like we were both incorrect. Most of the wildfires around me in Colorado have been caused by lightning, but that doesn’t apply to fires nationwide.
People Cause Most U.S. Wildfires

“University of Colorado scientist Jennifer Balch and several colleagues came to their conclusion after analyzing reports of 1.6 million wildfires from a comprehensives fire occurrence database maintained by the U.S. Forest Service...In contrast, lightning started the largest percentage of fires in the forests of the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest.”
Most wildfires in other areas have been caused by human accidents. But yes, many have been caused by arson, too. The big Hayman Fire in Colorado was intentionally caused by an employee of the U.S. Forest Service.

Yep. Nearly everyplace left of Iowa looks like a desert. If farms have to irrigated on it, it’s a desert. ;-)
But.
In this state we at least do wildfire prevention. Quite successfully. And if other states followed what we do, we wouldn't have to pay for this stuff exploding, people wouldn't be losing their homes and dying.
It just sickens me.
Kamela Harris is NOT eligible to be President.
Both of her parents were students here from other countries, and they did NOT get their citizenship until well after she was born.
Holy Fire = metaphor? This nation needs one.
update: Fire still out of control and down from 600 firefighters to 300 firefighters due to fighters being reassigned to the Clear Lake fire. Temp here on the hill is 116; containment less than 3%

Ok, good news. That should put everyone’s mind at ease
update: 5pm - wind shift is bringing light ash fall to downtown Lake Elsinore according to a local.
Voluntary evacuation for Ortega Highway/74 Riverside Co. announced. Exit over the ridge to Orange County side, not down to Lake Elsinore.
The 747 air tankers are awesome - compared to the smaller planes, it’s like the difference between a cup and a gallon in how much retardant they can lay down.
Not sure why it’s called Holy Jim Canyon, might go back to the tin mine days? Or maybe a prospecting preacher of yore?

update: By 5:35 p.m., the [voluntary evacuation] warning was expanded to include the Horsethief and Glen Eden communities...
A care and reception center has been set up for residents who evacuate; it is at Temescal Canyon High School, located at 18760 El Toro Road, in Lake Elsinore, according to Cal Fire Riverside.

locals report light ash falling at 74/Central and I15, and in parts of Corona.
Personal observation: last night from our hill we saw 2 main plumes of smoke pumping into the air; just now (7:15pm) there are at least 8 noticeable plumes stretched over a what seems to be a longer distance; the fire seems much bigger than this time last night - from our perspective. The 747 tanker is still working it. No telling how many tens of thousands of gallons of retardant has been dumped. Most of the smoke is currently blowing northeast.
Holy fire suspect arrested; local allegedly threatened this place will burn
Update: conditions are much worse. Fire size doubled last night and the winds, now blowing east, southeast are driving fire down towards the valley floor. Bulldozers and water trucks are being pre-positioned at housing development on the hills of north Elsinore. We saw many families evacuating. Entry is now restricted. Heavy ash and smoke in d/t Elsinore. We saw 8 more engines heading into Elsinore on Central, maybe fresh off the freeway.
Evacuation center is open on the east side of 1-15. Central Avenue go east and follow the signs (turn left at Burger King towards Lowes and follow the signs, and if traffic is tight there at the light, go one more light and turn left towards Chilis/Costco and track back thru the parking lot)
3rd day: smoke pouring off the top of the ridge. Yesterday there was no band of red fire retardant below the equipment on the peak; today there is fire lower on the Santiago according to a local, which would explain the red retardant:

MANDATORY evacuations were issued Wednesday afternoon for the communities of McVicker, Rice Canyon, Horsethief, Glen Eden, El Cariso Village, Sycamore, Painted Canyon and Rancho Capistrano.
The fire is steadily moving down several drainages going out to the Lake Elsinore area, Incident Commander Chris Fogle told reporters Wednesday.
good 3-D map showing fire in relation to Lake Elsinore. Mid-right center, Grand Ave goes up the hill into a housing development. The fire has moved down from the red area on the map to threaten homes in that area. Right where the word ‘grand’ curves, those homes are also threatened:
