My dad lives in Riverside County and just mentioned the same thing.
The homes of the arsinist’s neighbors had survived numerous fires, only to be taken out by a jackass with a match.
“Jim Smith was a foul-mouthed beekeeper who lived in the area in the 1880s. First known by many in the community as Cussin Jim, some impish friends began to call the crabby man Salvation Smith. That name eventually evolved into Holy Jim, which stuck.
“So much so that his nickname was used by government surveyors who later named the canyon. Holy Jim is in south Orange County, near another rustic community, Trabuco Canyon.
Jim wore the same floppy hat from one year to the next, wrote the late Jim Sleeper, an Orange County historian who had a cabin in Holy Jim for a half-century. He had a mustache like a walrus. Aside from this, and knowing the fullest intricacies of profanity, Jims only other major indelicacy was the eight-inch plug of tobacco he used to carry around in his hip pocket.
Incident web has Painted Hills as under mandatory evacuation. The radio says it’s voluntary. If you’re in Painted Hills you might want to call the info number to find out your status.

Threat from Holy fire, which swells to 9,614 acres overnight, leads to school closures in Riverside County
Several Riverside County school districts closed schools for Thursday as the Holy fire inched closer to neighborhoods.
By firefighters count, it went from 6,200 to 9,614 overnight.
(O)ut of an abundance of caution, and because of mandatory evacuations in specific neighborhoods affected by the Holy fire, the following Lake Elsinore Unified School District schools will be closed until further notice: Luiseño School, Rice Canyon Elementary, Terra Cotta Middle School, and Withrow Elementary, the district said on its website.
All of the schools in the Perris Elementary School District, the Perris Union High School District, the Menifee Union School District, and the Romoland School District, as well as Santa Rosa Academy, will be closed Thursday as well.

A community meeting to discuss the Holy Fire is scheduled to take place Thursday evening at Lake Elsinore. Representatives from the Southern California Interagency Management team and other cooperating agencies will give residents the latest information on the firefight.
The meeting will be held at Pins ‘N Pockets, located at 32250 Mission Trail; it will begin at 6 p.m.
By mid-afternoon Thursday, officials issued a new mandatory evacuation order for residents on the mountain side of Lake Street and southwest of Grand Avenue to the Ortega Highway, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Voluntary evacuations also went into effect in the Shorline and Machado communities.
The Holy Fire Is Burning In The Same Area Where 6 Firefighters Died 59 Years Ago [yesterday]
SCHOOLS WILL REMAIN CLOSED FRIDAY AND UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
update: 7:30pm - just got back from Elsinore. On the way into town, we were passed by engines from Palm Springs. We also saw engines from other towns coming in from the freeway. All hands on deck.
The north area at 5pm was looking really bad. Lots of flame visible in different areas. From our vantage at the community library across from the lake, we watched (thru binocs) a chopper waterdrop next to a large twostory white home lower down on Grand/Lake that had flames up to its fence. I don’t know if they were able to save that home. The smoke got so intense we were only seeing glimpses of the north area. There was also a time where the local firestation up there was in danger, but they got the fire around that knocked down, last heard.
The west ridge has a new fire immediately north of the lake itself. The smoke was just rolling off the slope at a fast boil and the fire was moving very fast back up to the crest of the ridge and down towards Grand Ave at the same time, driven by winds at least 20mph. The west fire is close to the Ortega Hwy, and an area that burned a few years ago, so maybe not so much fuel if it burns south - if it burns north it will not be good.
Aircraft were reportedly pulled off for an hour or so due to wind and smoke but the helicopters definitely jumped up to the task. A fleet of around 10 choppers were back and forth back and forth as fast as they could suck water from Lake Elsinore and get back to Lake/Grand fire on the north side. Gotta love those guys - they hover mere feet from the surface of the lake and then off they go at full throttle.
People are having trouble finding hotels, not a whole lot around here and most are full. Evacuation center in Elsinore had several dozen cars in the parking lot and a few motor homes, so they do have space there.
Last night we though we could sleep well and I wouldn’t be making any more posts since the fire seemed to be midway down the ridge with nowhere left to go and ready for mop-up. Today it exploded again and it will be another long night for those in Lake Elsinore who may be waking up to a fifth day of fire.
I’d say pray for Elsinore, but I’d rather you pray harder for the firefighters coming from all over who are saving Elsinore. Those guys and gals are working themselves to the bone and we can’t thank them enough.
Santiago Peak now in danger (lots of equipment up there - see WREN link above). Over 10,000 acres burned now - likely more (the percentage contained has been erased by expansion)

“The flames Friday afternoon threatened several properties that dot the winding roads near Highway 74 and Main Divide Road. Firefighters were focusing on the Coldwater Canyon area; Santiago Peak, home to communication towers for cell signals and law enforcement; and the Lake Elsinore neighborhoods including Horsethief Canyon, McVickers and El Cariso Village.
The flames were picking up on the north side of the fire about 2 p.m.”
