Walter Beedle Smith was the fourth director of the CIA. His three predecessors did not want the job. i don’t believe they’re even named. Wikipedia has an alphabetical listing of former directors but i haven’t the time or interest to look up who preceded General Smith.
Smith is often called the first director of CIA, however at the time CIA was formed, he was the US Ambassador to the Soviet Union. He was NOT first director.
And for the record, i have great respect for General Smith.
