They are going to make you provide your own reusable bags or sell them to you. They are not going back to paper. It’s just a way of passing off another cost to customers, one that will lead to my buying things where they do have the plastic bags. I never carry reusable bags with me.

Reusable bags are bacteria laden so that would be a bad idea. More trees can be grown for paper bags, unlike PLASTIC, paper is a renewable resource.
We use Kroger Click List almost exclusively, how will they get the bags from you and fill them in that model? I just don’t see it.

Not really, they are facing numerous municipal laws that have suddenly outlawed a product that people use. They decided this IN RESPONSE to force of government.
Courts have struck down plastic bag bans.
The meat will spoil faster, the soda and glass bottled milk will be much heavier and cost more to package and ship, and little kids are really bad with gallon cardboard milk packages.
That said, I find the soda in glass bottles tastes better and feels colder.
Plastic bags came into use to prevent the murder of trees for sacks. Remember when a check out person could send a brain dead young college kid into near seizures with the words...”Paper or Plastic.”
The “plastic’ in plastic grocery bags is gone in 35 years, buried in landfill...

The one innovation I’ve adopted is the Wal-Mart Pickup Service:
You go online, and it is organized like the store is, in virtual aisles. You buy the stuff you want from a local Wal-Mart with the service. You tell them when you are coming by.
You arrive, they load it into the back of your rig, and you drive off. I then buy meats, fruits, and veggies from someplace inexpensive where I can do the picking.
You still have to lug stuff up to your house, but you can invest the energy and aggravation you saved patrolling the aisles into your grocery workout.
Seven landings - good for the hammies, glutes, and calves.

Sometimes I’ll do a set of curls with the bags in my hand in the elevator.
I’m telling you, someone completely changed my world view on exercise and physical tasks that are a hassle:
You get to do them. You don’t HAVE to do them, you get to.
My ex-FIL is bedridden with MS. I should have picked that up about 20 years ago, but it took someone actually saying those words, ‘You get to’, for me to get it.
Almost killed myself backpacking two weekends ago. Way too tough a trail for my fitness level. Before, I would have couch potatoed for two years. Went home and realized being able to actually feel your pulse in your face doesn’t kill you, and the more you do it the easier it gets.
they need to teach baggers how to bag. Many times they stick one item per bag, “oh we can’t put those two kinds of items in the same bag”.
Or they put delicate produce like bananas or frsh bunch of herbs in bag then apples or such on top.
too many times dairy or items that will give off moisture, in with boxes or magazines so they stick together.
Not to mention the checkers that manhandle produce and all, banging in down on counter or some times tossing it toward the bagging area of the counter.
So the stores are not concerned about the quality of their bagging or damage they may be contributing to your items in how they bag them, just whether the bags are environmantally conscious enough?
So many things from old America that I wish would return. So any of the old things made for a better society.
What do they pick? A return to paper bags. And watch, they’ll bit@h abou that too. They won’t be happy until you carry your own little canvas bag to the store like a skinny yoga woman at whole foods who eats 9 green beans for dinner and can carry a month of food in a purse.
don’t panic. they will give you paper bags just as in the olden days.
since I despise plastic bags (they break and spill things) and can reuse paper bags for trash and bottles, I see this as a win.

Yeah, really worked out well didn’t it.
Plastic bags flying in the wind.
Hung up on fences, trees and other obstacles all over the country. Bury them in landfills and they take longer to break down.
Meanwhile paper bags, which quickly break down in landfills, are a rarity.
BUT..WE SAVED A TREE!!
Safeway has already done it (in my area anyway) either use your bag or buy a paper bag at checkout (5 cents).

I only recall 1/2 gallon cardboard milk containers-—and I opened them,not my little kids.
A little child couldn’t open a new plastic container of milk either.

I have read a that all reuseable bags MUST be washed in hot water and bleach OR they will eventually be contaminated with bacteria that will make you sick.
Get some heavy canvas bags with shoulder straps. Pay neighbourhood children to bear the bags on their backs, and schlep your groceries for you.
I have already begun hoarding them, figuring this would happen eventually.
