Some strong gusts, and a decent surge in a few spots, maybe 6 feet or so. But this is no longer a hurricane with a closed eye, so no destrucitve eyewall and corresponding surge. In short the forecasts for a catastrophic hurricane were wrong. Out of the remaining forecasts, the inland flooding is serious.

yes that’s true of the newer construction, last fifty years or so...some of the ‘50’s style bungalows are going to get raked, but for most houses on say, Oak Island, it would require a surge of 15 feet or more to ruin the internals...doubt anything like that happens...
Yep - they opened that door by claiming Trump was “complicit for the storm”....even a cat 1 moving slow and dropping lots of rain can cause significant problems but much better that the Armageddon predictions...many of which far exceeded even what it would have been if she hit as Cat 4.....prayers still up for those who will be enduring it.
What little residential construction houses there are remaining with first floor on the ground are Hazel survivors, which is to say they were very well constructed and well positioned, not very many left at all since most of the southern NC barrier islands were virtually scoured clean of houses by Hazel. That’s why houses began to be built raised on pilings.

I wasn’t just driving through Wrightsville Beach on Google. Hadn’t been there in may years. Most of the residential properties are up on pilings, but not the small businesses that I saw. Life in that neck of the woods won’t be back to normal for quite a while if small biz gets wiped out.

The old downtown section of Wrightsville beach once had high water marks from Hazel immortalized with painted on measurements, I’m just barely old enough to remember that being there. The concrete buildings had their first and second floors blown out and swept away, only leaving the support structure. The wooden retail structures were largely swept away. This storm is looking like a Cat 2. Do you know how many Cat 2 hurricanes have hit the NC coast in the past 50 years? Quite a few. Yes there will be damage. There’s damage in a tropical storm or even a winter nor’easter. That’s life on the ocean.

Looting behavior is largely an urban phenomenon and there are only two urban areas of any size on the NC and SC coast that will be affected by the currently forecasted landfall and storm track. Those are Wilmington and Charleston. Everything else is smaller towns and second home or resort areas, with the second home or resort areas being almost entirely on barrier islands. After a storm, access to barrier islands is restricted, even owners and full-time residents aren’t allowed back in for a while if the damage is bad enough, so you’re right about that part at least. Then, limited access to the island is opened up to property owners and residents only, in addition to emergency personal and utility work crews. Looting is seldom an issue in these places because of this.
