How about Bob Dole saying cigarettes are not addictive....
Dan Quale failing to correct the mis-spelling of potatoes....
Each one of these Republicans was hammered constantly for weeks over these gaffes. Obama was given a bye on the 57 states misspeak.
Also, no one could mention his middle name “Hussein” without being disbarred from the media for being racist.

Years back in the 2008 election cycle I was in a room of fellow Googlers who were having fun attributing ridiculous things that a comedian said on behalf of Sarah Palin to Sarah Palin herself. And I mentioned that the latest was she had mentioned that there were 57 states. They were excited and gleeful, faces lighting up around the room. I then feigned to have been confused and corrected myself that it was actually Obama who had said it. And the smiles instantly disapeared for some reason.
The moral of the story is to not ever be like the people in that room: not caring about what was really real, only caring to find tid bits of half truths that make you feel better about your partisan tribe.
I had held up hope that the culture of Google could overcome that shallow bigotry in regard to politics. Years later and seeing how they have behaved since as a company, and the recent tapes that have come out, I have to admit I was wrong.
