Abraham Lincoln thought so,too. Lee was his first choice to lead the Grand Army of the Republic.

Both before and during the Civil War, Robert E. Lee was a great military commander. It would be hard to plot how the south would have performed as well as it did during the beginning of the war, nor hung on as long as it did, were it not for Robert E. Lee. Admitting that is no praise of slavery or anything the south was committed to. It is simply rightful praise of Lee as a great military commander.

While I’m glad the north won the civil war, that does not take away from the fact that Robert E. Lee was a brilliant general.

If great means being the most profligate with your men’s lives then yes Lee is amongst the greatest.

I want President Trump to follow up with this statement:

“Adolph Hitler was a savvy politician. He also was enough of a visionary to be instrumental in building the Autobahn, and to drive the construction of the Volkswagen.”

Lee was a fine general, but he wasn't the general that the Confederacy needed in order to win.

Maybe such a general didn't and couldn't exist: something to think about when people think about going to war.

The war that Lee wanted to fight wasn't one that he could have won -- not against Grant anyway.

His chief hope was that the other side would give up.

Yeah, Lee might’ve been our greatest general. At this rate it won’t be long (if we’re not there already) when declaring George Washington to be a great American will be controversial.

He was a great general defending hearth and home from northern aggressors
