In all of US history, only one unsuccessful VP candidate has later won the Presidency—FDR (VP nominee in 1920).

Hickenlooper says, “I am running.”

...I believe we are going to have at least 24 major candidates.

I hope they destroy each other in the primaries.

In all of US history, only one unsuccessful VP candidate has later won the Presidency—FDR (VP nominee in 1920).

Very small sample as to be almost meaningless, and the role and prominence of VP has changed dramatically since those days.

There is no shortage of recent folks trying (Mondale, Edwards, Shriver). Palin probably could have gotten the nomination in 2012 if she decided to go for it, and being a losing VP gave her more credibility than being governor of Alaska. Before Trump no one ever won who had neither government nor military experience. Wendell Willkie comes closest off the top of my head, and even he served in war, though not prominently. And he didn't win. We are in an era where the old assumptions will not always work.
