Yep.
Children born on USA soil, under the current law, are citizens and native born, so I guess there is not really a category for that in an immigration study.
From memory, there are 300,000 anchor babies born here each year, so that might be helpful in determining the illegal population.
Also from memory, the number of foreign born USA residents plus their minor children (born here or another country) is about 62 million, which is almost 20% of our population.
Also from memory, the number of naturalized citizens is more than 20 million.
All this data comes from an annual Census Bureau survey called the American Community Survey.
I will speculate they do not ask foreign born residents if they are legal or illegal, because they would get a very, very low number of illegal replies.
Children born on USA soil, under the current law, are citizens...
Of course, but as that issue is presently under consideration and hopefully corrected, such information would be valuable for planning purposes.
Apparently, the ACS survey is not based on the identity of those interviewed. If it was, it would be rather easy to cross-reference the names with pertinent government records and determine what number of the total was illegal. It would seem a determination could be made vis Social Security numbers, but the number would be understated.
