I’m seriously confused by the first sentence in the article. Are Mexican authorities now officially in charge of the U.S. border, or is this simply an understanding of our default position?
Yep. Seems to be grounds for POTUS to recall his ambassador to Mexico, close the border and play hard ball. But so far we getting way more bark than bite from him on the border.

Exactly. Many of of us have been with Trump since the “Mexican Rapist” speech. I understand why POTUS won’t close the border. Too many wetback anchor babies actually live in Mexico and go to school in the US. It would be TV pics 24/7/365 of little Paco and Pedro crying at the closed border unable to go to school.
But The Federales escorting the caravan of 3rd country foreign nationals to the border is a bridge to far. This is a state sponsored action and must be responded to forcefully. Otherwise, POTUS risks losing his entire base.
Remember the reporting on all of this comes from the media and we are supposed to know they always report to further an agenda, not to inform.
I live about 8 miles from the border in a very remote area. There are no towns of any size in the US or Mexico for many miles. I can only speak for my area of the border but here the Guatemalans have been steadily arriving in larger numbers since the heat of the summer cooled off. I have no idea why the media focused on the one “caravan” when by the time they reported on that caravan there were Guatemalans arriving in groups numbering near a hundred a day and some days closer to 200 at the Port of Entry in this area (which is 45 miles from me) to turn themselves in to the Border Patrol.
Border Patrol was spread thin detaining, processing, transporting the Guatemalans that had already arrived before this group was anywhere near here. I know the left accuses Trump of focusing on this one “caravan” for political reasons but from where I sit I believe that particular group was organized and publicized by the left with the support of the media to embarrass President Trump and the other Rs before the midterms.
The only reason there were not large numbers of this “caravan” storming the border in the days before the midterms is because Trump had some serious discussions with Mexico. So the caravan was delayed and the story all but died out, the plans of the left to politicize this didn’t work the way they planned.
The thing is for whatever reason the Guatemalans are coming in large numbers and the numbers have been growing the past few years. The numbers are now growing from Honduras, and El Salvador as well. I do not know the solution, I personally want a wall and strict enforcement. We cannot possibly deal with all these people, we should not be expected to. If conditions are so bad in Central America it needs to be addressed, by many countries but needs to be done there.
I had the ear of a Senator’s representative a couple days ago at a meeting about border security. I asked her straight out why these people are coming, she claimed the government in those countries is actively supporting gangs to harass, threaten, even murder people who are not going along with the government. The Senator she represents is an open borders guy (Heinrich) so I asked her why more is not being done to help the people there. Her answer was to tell me Mexico has been trying to get the UN involved. She mentioned that we all need to be compassionate about these people and I asked her how compassionate it is to expect people to hike thousands of miles for help. I told her putting myself in their shoes it would be horrible to need help and help is thousands of miles away and I would have to somehow get there. She was stumped by that one. She was expecting me to be in her face about what we are dealing with on the border but truly how compassionate is it to not help people where they are if they truly need help as the left claims? She painted these people as desperate for their very survival yet the left’s answer is for them to travel thousands of miles for help.
Among the Guatemalans most do turn themselves in at a Port of Entry to be processed, they have been coached to do that. People from Honduras and El Salvador are beginning to arrive in larger numbers and for whatever reason most of them do not turn themselves in and if not detained by Border Patrol they continue into this country.
Of course we still have the normal illegal activities on the border of human and drug trafficking, people crossing from nearly every country in the world. Absolute criminals being detained crossing illegally.
What the media is reporting is only what they feel supports their agenda, the truth is not part of the equation. After attending that meeting about security concerns of people in the small community here I was astonished that even some of them don’t get it. They didn’t want any discussion of the wall or actual border security at the meeting. They said they were only concerned with the security of their community. Those that felt that way seem to have no clue that as long as the border is not secured their community cannot be secure from people crossing the border. What a disconnect.
The media was invited to attend the meeting I went to but the only one that showed up was a man doing documentaries on the border. TV stations, newspapers did not show up. Interestingly enough a reporter has now been calling some people who were at the meeting to interview them. There is a TV station that serves this area that reports constantly on the border issues, always from the angle of supporting open borders and amnesty. They set themselves up to be the authority of border issues and many fall for their propaganda. They didn’t bother to send anyone to the meeting.
The way I understand it, the military has been building facilities to hold these invaders - long term.
I see no way a Dem House and amnesty loving GOP Senate funds that.
I see no fight in POTUS on this issue. Hopefully, he is wanting to wrap up the new trade deal before dropping a MOAB on Mexico. If that is not the case we are in deep trouble because either 1)POTUS isn’t serious on the border issue or 2)He’s been completely outflanked by the beltway and is powerless.
Yes, it was a slap in the face. In a just world, the taunters would immediately be deported back to their country with a “Sorry mate, gotta start over!”
In a just world they’d serve a prison term for illegal entry into the United States and then be deported.
Looks more and more like Trump is all talk. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not encouraged by what I’m seeing.

I want to add that our Senators, Representatives, local elected officials were invited to attend the meeting I attended Tuesday about the security of those living in this area of the border. I live in a blue state, but we do have some Rs. None of the Rs attended and though excuses were given they did not even send anyone to stand in for them. I find this inexcusable, the rats all attended or sent someone to represent them. I feel like the Rs for the most part don’t get it. It sure didn’t look good to see their empty chairs with their names on them at the front of the room during the meeting. This was a small meeting and I get not many votes here, but the bigger picture is my area has always gone R in a blue state and the left was fully represented. The optics were very bad to me at least.
