“Wait until SF gets hit. Or LA”

The Cascadia subduction zone will be a massive geological event as well.

But a 7.0.... no.

Anchorage got hit by a 9.2 in 1964. That's over 100 times stronger than a 7.0.

Whittier quake of 1987?

Was in PWS fishing that year - don’t remember any quake like that or hearing about one.

Whittier quake was in 1964 and was 9.x

There was a quake in September of 1987 and I thought it was called the Whittier quake. Remember distinctly as we had visitors from the UK who were quite alarmed.

I guess you’ve got things in the house pretty much nailed down then.

I “survived” the Northridge quake in 94 and was a half mile from the epicenter. I’ve watched some of the videos of this one in Anchorage and what I experienced was worse. Everything in the house was turned over, TV, fishtank, bookcase ,refrigerator opened up food everywhere.gas and water line broke, chimney fell off the roof and my wife’s wedding gift glassware destroyed. I had been working on my motorcycle in the garage and all the parts got mixed up with every other screw bolt nails off the shelves. No power for a week. Had to boil water for 6 weeks after water mains repaired. The bright side was that I just got my contractors license 3 years before and I made a ton of dough.

I felt that Whittier Narrows quake in Santa Barbara.

I had just gotten off the phone with a business associate in London. I felt the desk in my bedroom moving slightly.

I walked into the hallway and a big lighting fixture over the stairs was swaying.

Exactly.

We don’t feel all the ones in Southern California, but there are a lot of them.

1964 it was 9.2 (20+ times greater) ... which makes a 7.x look like child’s play.

Shouldn't that be 100+ times greater? Each whole number increase is tenfold, so a 9 versus 7 would be 10x10 or 100 times greater.

I seem to recall a ‘running joke’ about buying Ocean front property in Nevada in prep for California breaking off and falling into the sea..

That was mid-late 50s or 60s ... I think...

You are probably right - it seems a bit confusing - originally, it was just supposed to be 10x but then there are different sets of values which seem to indicate 1000x or 100x depending. Just lets say significantly greater.

Aside: The 10x scale is how the Volcanic VEI is reported

nailed down as the whole house sides ignominiously into a very deep crevasse, or tips over the side of a newly formed cliff.

September — that would have been after I left PSW for another fishery.

The story is about AK not CA. Whittier, AK is very unique - when I was there everything had to come in by boat or by railroad (through a tunnel) - one of those trains where you drive your vehicle onto - else use the passenger car. Fun.

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/calculator.php

A 9.2 is almost 2,000 times stronger than a 7.0 in terms of the amount of energy. Of course depth (and distance from the epicenter are critical too).

My son was joking with me about how this EQ would be blamed on being caused by global warming.

“Well - that’s just stupid. An EQ expends energy. Energy creates heat, ergo - EQ’s cause global warming.”
