Primary challenges against incumbent presidents are rare but not unprecedented. The last time it happened was in 1992, when Republican Pat Buchanan unsuccessfully challenged President George H.W. Bush. Twelve years earlier, Democrat Ted Kennedy mounted a challenge to President Jimmy Carter. One does not know for certain what in in Mister Kasich's sick little mind; however one suspects strongly that he wants to settle some scores, here. Further suspicions are that he wants to split the non-Dem vote and to sink Trump, and do the full Ross Perot (and hand the next election to the Dems).
He could do this as a GOP challenger or an indy. Either way, he can split and destroy.

I figured the Democrats would have figured it out by now. The best way to beat Trump is to drive his base away from him. How do you do that if you’re a Democrat? Work with him.
