That article is interesting. I was aware that Israel was operating in Syria. I was referring to more of a full scale invasion on the scale of what they did in Lebanon in 2006 and 1982. That would throw the middle east into chaos.

I’m glad Bibi has good relations with Russia, however I don’t trust the Russian intentions in Syria. They can’t dislodge us as evidenced by that disastrous attack they had (and deny) on us, but we’ll voluntarily leave and give away all of our bargaining power. Not good IMO.

"Our foothold just doesn’t exist."

Actually it does. Why do you think Erdogan is calling President Trump about it? Let him try to attack our position. The same thing will happen to him as what happened to those Russian mercenaries. He's bluffing and we are acquiescing to his bluff it looks like.

This way Israel can carpet bomb Iranian troops in Syria without worrying about blowback on American forces.

How long before the false flag “chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime on civilians”? Calling it now.

“Our leaving ends nothing. There is still the war in Northern Syria with our allies the Kurds wedged between Erdogan and the ISIS forces & other allied Islamists.”

The very best thing that could happen for the Syrian people is for the Government of Syria to regain control over the entire territory.

The Kurds did OK under Assad.

And the Syrian army would be in a position to repel Turkey, even if they have to rely on Russian help.

Not "allies." Another Mideast tribe of heathens we became entangled with to our great expense and misfortune.

Tribes in the Mideast do NOTHING for us. We need them for NOTHING and we need NOTHING from them.

“Are our national interests served by having those three working things out?”

Yes.

We have a singular national interest in Syria.

ONE.

And that is civil stability.

There are no others, No matter how the do-gooders and war mongers frame it, they can come up with no other plausible interest that outweighs that ONE.

Russia has a much greater national interest in Syria than we do. It’s been that way since the 1950s or so.

“Calling it now.”

Good call.

But American’s givvash!tometer is stuck on zero when it comes to Syria.

What about protecting our Kurdish allies?

What about preventing Iran from gaining a greater foothold in the region?

What about obliterating ISIS? Yes they are almost done, but like a virus if we don't completely wipe them out they could come back. Just like us leaving Iraq too early spawned ISIS, leaving Syria too early could spawn something else.

We are talking about approximately 2000 troops that are not currently taking casualties or being attacked. The best article I could find has said that a total of five U.S. deaths in Syria, two of them non combat related and one this year.

IMHO, none of those interests are worth a single dollar, or a single life.

We’ll have to agree to disagree, knowing that my position on the matter has prevailed with POTUS.

Don't send up the victory flag yet! POTUS has been known to change his mind...

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Syrian army came to the rescue of the Kurds. The Kurds have existed along before we got involved.

A few possibilities:

- This might be an inaccurate press report (fog of war).

- This could be because of Erdogan probing US resolve after the Democrats won the House. He wasn’t bluffing about invading Afrin.

- This could be Erdogan trying to distract away from the Operation to finish off ISIS (which is desperately close to defeat), to enable more escapes or even to decisively end the operation and save a functioning caliphate, however small.

- This withdrawal might be a legal demand from incoming Democrat leaders in the House (under the War Powers Act), or even a negotiating chip in the budget battle.
