I will once again be a huge supporter of the DOD when the they start to defend OUR border, patrol OUR border and build a wall. They also need to kick all the pervs, trannys and other undesirables out. Until then then the DOD is just another untrustworthy bureaucracy to me anyway. I am “woke” now.

We shouldn't look at the president's decisions in Syria in isolation. This was done simultaneously with the government shutdown over wall funding. The deep state does not want the wall, and it does want the US in Syria permanently. President Trump responded to the resistance to wall funding by taking Syria away from the deep state. (and getting rid of Matthis early)

There are a lot more things the president can do against the deep state if he wants, without congressional approval. The president might be very busy through this shutdown.

He was also a socipathic nut who nursed a huge resentment towards the USMC, the Dept of the Navy and the US government for him being blocked from becoming Commandant since his Congressman for Life father expired at the wrong time and Smedley faced all the people he had screwed over in his egomaniac climb to the top. I first heard this from aMarine who served from 1919 to 1938 and who had been and fought in Haiti and Nicaragua and served in China. He was a Quantico when Butler built his football stadium there and (and I believe this guy) Butler had the Marines from both the tactical and support functions working 6 1/2 days a week (12 hour days) as labor for his pet rock stadium. The desertion and UA rate went through the sky and being only 40 miles from HQUSMC brought a full colonel and a staff team from the Inspector General of the USMC to make a friendly visit. The findings nearly caused a court marshal for Butler who was told he would retire at the end of his tenure at Quantico, like in a few months. His dad died around this time and while SB (as he was unlovingly known throughout the Corps) called in every marker he had it didn't work. He left the USMC seething with rage at those he considered ‘betrayed’ him. One result was his Ron Paulist hyperbolic denunciations of the military and the US government.

“the “mission” was never primarily about ISIS; it was about eliminating the Assad regime.”

More than that, Russia’s mission was to establish their own mission and renew their bases and build new ones. Iran’s mission was to establish their own bases and attack and provoke Israel from Israel’s border with Syria. Turkey’s mission was to establish themselves as the rebirth of the Turkish Ottoman rulers of Syria and the Middle East. The US mission was to stop them all from achieving their objects and to get rid of Assad the butcher and establish their own puppet. Same old story - new chapter. In my opinion. As far as protecting Israel’s interest, that has always been horseshit. Israel will have to protect their own interest. It has always been the case. They can not trust America (or anyone else) to guarantee their security in a hostile world. The price of that guarantee would be too expensive, indeed. We have lost too many fine young men protecting other people’s interest on foreign lands. I applaud the President for having the guts to stand up to his military advisors. The best way that we can help Israel is to give them the green light to do what they have to do to defend themselves against all of their enemies, and resist them in the UN and on the World stage.

The United States should pursue policies, including war fighting, that serve the national interests of the USA, Not serve any set of abstractions period.

Also, and at the very least, when we do engage in someone else's conflict it would be helpful if they had different skin color, that way we would know who to cheer for.

As far back as 2006 our embassy was taking actions to destabilize Assad and turn the country over to Sunnis.
This is pure evil to look for a war, and set the circumstances in motion to create it years in advance.

State/CIA/and our Generals are pond scum.

Don’t forget “kinetic military operation”. That’s what Obama and Hillary called their intervention in Libya. Oddly enough, I cannot find that phrase anywhere in the Constitution.

I think you meant this:

The best way that we can help Israel is to give them the green light to do what they have to do to defend themselves against all of their enemies, and assist them in the UN and on the World stage.

Doing so serves our interests and Israel’s too, maybe not K Street’s.

“Overthrowing the Syrian dictator has been their goal since the beginning of that country’s civil war in 2011”

According to Wikileaks the Damascus embassy was laying the groundwork as far back as 2006.

Very good. It’s right their with ‘environment’ ‘education’ and ‘privacy’. You just have to have the right copy.

Depressingly that is probably true of a number of US Embassies around the world.

Your replies are scary in that I would and have posted the same/similar observations.

The view is (with some justification) that letting Assad stay will only allow Syria to move further into Russia’s orbit.

And it will. Assad was an ally of Russia for decades.

The Left and the Fedgov was planning on at least of proxy war with Russia by now. Trump didn’t play along.

The question is “Why now? Why Russia?”

The military is a bureaucracy. Bureaucracies exist for their own interests, NOT the best interests of America.

Are you saying this is not generally true? If so, what about it isn't generally true.

“The President cannot declare war unless we are attacked. “

He can’t even do it then. He can shoot back in self defense, but he has to go to Congress to get war declared beyond self defense.

So, kind of an early John McCain.

I know it is not a perfect fit. Still, thanks for this bit of wisdom. I figured there was a back story.
