Trump Told Reporters Yesterday That He Thought His Primetime Speech Would Be A Waste Of Time

What Really Happened?

Donald Trump succinctly laid out the problem, then he called out both Chuckie and Nan to do the right thing. Then he let everyone know who is causing the problem of illegals killing innocent Americans.

I do believe that this was his shot across the bow. They have been warned.

Now, if he feels a declaration of emergency is warranted and emergency funding is gathered, Chuck and Nan are just going to have to eat it.

"Stop making things up. It takes 60 votes in the Senate."

I am not positive, but I believe that the 60 vote thing was a Senate rule, changeable by majority Senate vote.

In a way, yes it was a waste of time if the goal was to get the Democrats closer to compromise. If your goal is to build your case with the public for going around Congress and declaring a national emergency, then it served its purpose. The art of the deal. I wish POTUS had gone the national emergency route last night but I’ll leave the timing to him.

We got some sweet-ass Pelosi/Schumer memes out of it.

I'm glad he made the speech. He may not get out of it what he might have liked; but, having Chuck and Nancy provide so much negative press the next day makes it worth doing.

What is a word opposite of "charisma", 'cause that was Chuck and Nancy.

One commentator said he has seen more enthusiasm and energy from captives filmed in a hostage tape.

McConnell has held the line on requiring 60 votes because he doesn't even have 50 votes.

Bears repeating.

Divide and conquer “news” story. There’s one point: If Trump caves on the wall he’s done. His agenda is gone. His re-election is gone. His political clout is gone. He’s a lame duck. He has to build it however he can.

What you posted is the unfortunate truth. The American people want the “wall” and border security. The democrats know this and are fighting us every step of the way.

Time to declare National Emergency and just go for it.

Yes, I think Mike Huckabee said something like, “is this the Dem response, or a hostage video?”

“To declare a national emergency and make every attempt to have the military make progress on protecting the border.”

What’s interesting here is that it’s no-lose for Trump if he notes that the either the courts allow him to build the Wall, or he simply keeps the government closed until things are settled. That way judges can trade off the hundreds of thousands of federal workers...versus supporting the Democrat attempts to block Trump from carrying out his promise.

“when in reality there is no political will for border security among most Republicans, either.”

I would say “was” no political will on the part of the Republicans. But I’d now say that there is, even if it’s only fleeting, in order to get the government started up again.

He’s been president for nearly two years, and up until last week, Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress. At any point during that two years, Republicans could have passed a bill to fund the border wall, and he could have gotten at least $5.6 billion.

Republicans didn't want to do it before the midterms either. Trump's choice was to pick a fight with Republicans in the House who would not support it, lose, and piss them off at the same time.

He could wait till the midterms, and if Republicans gained seats, he could urge them to pass it, and perhaps enough would support the idea to solve the problem with no fuss.

If Democrats gained control of a house, they weren't going to pass it, but he loses nothing beating up on them, unlike he would if they were his allies.

Trump did exactly the right thing. He didn't fight with the Republican house membership before the midterms, and now he can fight with the Democrat controlled house after the midterms.

The Senate will still not pass it, even though our side has control.

RE: McConnell has held the line on requiring 60 votes because he doesn’t even have 50 votes.

He has 53 Republicans now. Even Romney says he’s going to vote yes on the wall funding. Corker and Flake are gone. Which Republican is going to cave?

The “real problem” is that 53 GOP Senators have not marched over to the White House and demanded Trump declare a national emergency and use the military to build the wall. THAT would give POTUS leverage with the Dems. Unfortunately, the GOP doesn’t want a wall either so we get more useless beltway theater that will end with another stinking pile of garbage bill from Congress and “The Wall” tied up in court.
