The idea of medicalizing guns is to take them outside of the protections of the Constitution.
One of Progressivism's first big successes was to move state "safety" requirements outside of Constitutional protections.

My father told me he was one time asked by his physician if he owned firearms. He told me, he told him, pretty bluntly , to mind his own business!!

Up next - the medical profession will be required to ask if youre a Trump supporter.
We became a totalitarian communist country so fast I didnt even notice.

“Involving doctors in gun safety: This act would require medical professionals to ask patients about guns in the home, and bring up the topics of gun safety. The goal, Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said, is to identify those at risk for domestic violence, suicide or child access to guns in order to guide people to mental health counseling, resources or other help. Were just asking them to help identify ways to save lives, Gross said.”
A precursor to confiscation under a “red flag determination.”

"...doctors to be required to ask about personal gun ownership..."
Never answer truthfully if a gunowner. Do not get all cute or snarky about it, either.
Just very simply and very calmly say, "No, we do not have guns in our home."

No way! On the topic, I frequently remind my boys that it is absolutely no one's business if we do or do not own guns, how many, what kind, ammunition stores, etc. Legislating it makes it no more acceptable.
Besides, what next? If a doctor notes patient uses drugs, such as pot, and owns guns, is the doctor now required to report the firearms violation? And, if they don't, are they going to be prosecuted, held liable, and jailed?

The standard gun owner’s (and freedom loving non-gun owner’s) answer should be “Break into my home some night and you’ll find out, Doc”.

Problem with lying is that it undermines your credibility on other matters. Find a way to answer that is not a lie. Leave the lying to others.

Would gun ownership then get HIPAA protection?

Each of the smartaleck responses above resulted in doctor checking a "YES" in the box and that info to be entered into a government database.
Why so eagerly provide them with accurate information? Be smart, people!

Just because the Dr is required to ask does mean that you are required to answer.
