He had a small part in “Apocalypse Now.” During the helicopter assault his line was “Fifty cal, fifty cal”

His major malfunction = being dead

I just barely made it through BCT in '69. I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes with Gunnery Sergent Hartman.
RIP,"Gunny".

Im naming you Private Snowball. Do you like that name Pvt. Snowball? If you mention fried chicken you'll be banned from FR for life.
But seriously...I did my BCT at Ft Knox in '69.In our company we had 2 New Yorkers,a guy from Michigan,Bostonian (me) and the rest of the guys were from Tennessee,Mississippi and Texas...and all but four of us were white.
With all those white Southern boys I thought there was gonna be a whole lot of trouble.Turns out there was *no* trouble at all...not from the white guys or the black guys.
As a naive kid from the suburbs of Boston I was surprised...pleasantly surprised.

Awesome speech. I heard he made it up on the spot. <>I saw a documentary on the making of the film in which it was said that the director,Stanley Kubrick, gave Ermy huge latitude to just do things on his own.It was suggested that he pretty much wrote his own part.

Ever see The Frighteners? Ermey played a pretty good parody of Hartmann. Except he was dead.

judge offered him juvenile detention or the military. Ermey chose the Marines
I wonder if judges still have that discretion...assuming the Marines would take 'em.
Changed a lot of guys around.
Semper Fi, Gunny.

Semper Fi, Gunny.
There was a classmate in high school around 1971 that got busted for a few joints one night. We all heard he was given that choice. It was like he disappeared in a puff of smoke if you will pardon the pun.
In 1980 I was stationed in Tampa with the Air Force and drove over one day to visit my brother stationed in Orlando as a CBPO Lieutenant. We are standing there and who should walk into the CBPO for TDY out-processing with the MOB unit (mobile telecommunications) but our classmate with Staff Sgt stripes.
I was also a Staff Sgt in telecommunications. He seemed standoffish but it may have been my brother being an officer or he was embarrassed that we asked about his coerced enlistment. He also got along fine in the Air Force and had reenlisted just as The Gunny did.
A few years ago a couple of friends posted photos of him on fb, back home doing fine. He had apparently retired from the Air Force. My brother also retired, but I got out after doing my six years.
