it is RASMUSSEN POLL that they are referring to. Your issue should be with RASMUSSEN. Don’t shoot the messenger.

I don't care if the pollster is Howard the Duck. Any poll that says "or a third party candidate" without saying anything about the candidate, or naming someone not deeply known on whom voters can project their own preferences is meaningless. Can Michael Bloomberg get 29%? Mark Zuckerberg? Bill Gates? Larry Ellison? Spike Lee? Maybe Oprah Winfrey could get 29% as a Third Party candidate if the Dems went with Biden. You can bet those votes would NOT come out of Trump's hide.

If you call an unknown Schultz an independent, he’ll poll well. Once it’s revealed that he’s a down the line Democrat on every issue except Medicare for all, he will cannibalize any candidate on the Democrat ticket. This is why the Communists are going bananas at his candidacy.

“Before you shoot the messenger, please look at the poll it is referring to — RASMUSSEN.”

Ok, but it’s meaningless because Trump’s opponents are not named, and the ideology of the 3rd party candidate is not specified. More likely, Hot Air which leans conservative knows a left leaning third party candidate like Schultz will help Trump, so they’re trying to bait the left into believing the opposite is true to get them to back off their attacks on him.

Giuliani's emergence [in 2008] is notable because the early Republican front-runner has won that party's nomination in each election since 1972

Once we drop re-election/incumbent campaigns (Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush the Elder, Bush the Younger) we get whittled down to four races. (Reagan '80, George the Elder '88, Dole '96, George the Younger '00).

Giuliani had never held more than local elective office, and was neither a general nor a self-financing billionaire. The polling was done before the drag pictures and his radical pro-abort stance became widely publicized.

Always be suspicious when timelines cherry pick a favorable horizon. Why 1972? Why go back 36 years and not an even 40? Because in '68 Nixon was not the front-runner early on, and in '64 Goldwater CERTAINLY wasn't the front-runner in early polling.

It’s about peeling away enough EV to throw the race to the Democrat. A progressive corportist like Schultz is tailor made for Utah, Wisconsin, Arizona, etc. And best of all it doesn’t leave any GOPe fingerprints on a Trump loss. You can bet Romney is in his ear encouraging him to run.

This is all about 270. No candidate receives 270 electoral votes and it goes to, surprise surprise, The House of Representatives an Nazi Pelousy.

Self-correction: Even though Reagan got more votes (thanks to CA) than Nixon, Nixon was still the front runner in early polling in ‘68. The author should have gone back to ‘68, it would have made his point stronger.

There’s no such thing as a centrist Democrat any more. Bernie Sanders is, no joke, the voice of moderation in that party.

Bingo. You nailed it. As much as everyone here likes to laugh at AOC she is going to be considered mainstream in about twenty years. They are now officially a European-style Social Democratic party, on it's way to becoming an openly Socialist one.

The further the left goes (just getting started), the more Democrats desperately searching for a moderate will go for Shultz. He can be their Ross Perot.

Giving credence to a poll pertaining to President Trump: I guess imbeciles just don't learn from past mistakes.

I think Rush Limbaugh made an excellent point yesterday that 2020 needs to be about ACTIVATING voters, nor PERSUADING them.

Democrats are almost entirely unpersuadable at this point, due to Trump Derangement and general Liberal arrogance about believing you’re right about everything. Trying to persuade them is a waste of effort.

Trump on the other hand succeeded by ACTIVATING voters who had given-up and gone to the sidelines after thirty years of having their best interests ignored by elites.

It is almost a completely polarized country, and every election is now a Turnout Election. That’s a scary place to be, as with another Obama-type candidate or a sufficiently generous giveaway platform the Dems could activate their voters to get off the couch and swarm us.

I actually think he would be more attractive to Romne type progressive corportist Republicans. The socially liberal Trump hating neocons and country club set. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I expect Schultz will increasing lean toward the right and co-opt some of Trump’s rhetoric.

This is partly why the GOPe Congress slow walked the MAGA agenda. They know if Trump doesn’t get much done his base will not come out in 2020. So far legislatively he’s accomplished basically nothing. A permanent corporate tax and Christmas for Criminals is pretty much it. The personal tax cuts expire. Obamacare is the law of the land. Thank you John McNasty and K Street for that one.

Why would it hurt Trump more than whoever the Democrat candidate will be?

There may have been some sarcasm in my post on President Hillary.

In theory, a third party candidate could get real consideration from those who dislike Trump's abrasive approach but also dislike the democrat nominee's expected far-left agenda. That is, most likely, why Rasmussen's poll got the result he did. In the real world, what people say they will do and what they actually do can be quite different. Especially on questions related to Trump, where the left says Trump is "literally Hitler" so they respond to pro-Trump individuals by acting literally like the terrorists they are, I have very little trust in today's polls.
