My guess is he knows that and is trying to do as much damage as possible to Trump so that when the music finally stops, Mueller’s friends will be protected, and they in turn will defend him.

I think the Republicans are so weak-willed that they allowed the Democrats to convince them that Trump is their "problem" to clean up.
As I've posted before, Republicans' greatest skill is to save Democrats from their own problems, knowing that the Democrats' greatest skill is to trick Republicans into believing they are in no-win situations.
