"Looking at the map, with that LONG red tongue of Chinas claim, well, it is ridiculous. " Ridiculous yes, but what is that old saying about possession and the law? The Britt navy is no more than a caricature of its former self and aside from the American boomers, I think most of us have doubts about the prowess of the USN after eight years of the Usurper.

"Theresa May has taken a page out of the the US neocon playbook, and has decided to send Britains new aircraft carrier to Chinas backyard"
Nothing biased in the above sentence. How is it that the United States Navy protecting freedom of navigation of the worlds waterways, which oh by the way has been one of it's missions since before the word neocon came into existence is somehow American imperialism?
On a side note, does anyone know what the bookmakers in Vegas have for the odds of this clunker actually making it to the Spratley Islands to transit through? Nelson must be rolling over in his grave....

The HMS Queen Elizabeth was just commissioned; it would be a shame to see it sunk on its first voyage...

Excellent insight. I have one small change.
When will the West come to the realization that Asians really do not want white people dictating their affairs. Its up to the Chinese and the non Chinese Asians to work out their own political and social consensus. Mothers in Kansas or England ‘don’t’ want their children to die trying to establish borders and mineral rights in Asia.

You really don't know of what you speak of. The Carl Vinson made a port call to Danang Vietnam last year. The first A/C there since the end of the war. We ended an arms embargo against them in 2016 and are moving towards normalizing relations with them. The Phillipines under Duatarte have sought closer relations with the U.S. military by signing an agreement with the U.S. for a permanent military presence at five bases. More of our ships are porting in Subic Bay as well and we are conducting more joint training.
Whether it's Japan, South Korea, Vietnam or the Phillipines, they are all seeking closer relations with us and rejecting Chinese hegemony. To put it bluntly, they want us there.

So, they’re sending their entire Navy eh.
To: romanesq
It must as you cant send a carrier out naked.

Last I heard there were no planes and little ammo for ship defense. Ski jump carriers are a waste of time and money in any case.

To anyone with the slightest sense of history, Brits using a fleet to try to push the Chinese around won’t sit well with China.
In their mind it’ll be a modern opium war. The Brits have a nasty history in China. Forcing the opium trade on them by warfare. Creating the HSBC to service their drug peddler trade. The period where they divided up China into spheres along with other colonial powers.
Not a good visual for Brits to come sailing in issuing orders. Especially with their third rate navy as it is today.

” I think most of us have doubts about the prowess of the USN after eight years of the Usurper. “
The destruction of the USN started with Tailhook and Dick Cheney. Under Obozo it kicked into high gear. Reading about the USS Fitzgerald is a horror show. It’s incomprehensible that they have fallen so far into incompetence.

Then Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines should combine their economic might and make that clear. Their plan, like Europe’s is to come running to us to be their protector and the muscle of their ideas.

That's a debate to have, but a separate one than what I was responding to. I originally responded to this idea that the Asian man doesn't want the white man in America to tell him how to work things out between them and China. Aside from it being a silly statement to begin with, it's demonstrably false and provable which I did.
As to your assertion, the South Koreans have a very large land Army that we have combined exercises with all the time. I participated in many of them. Abe is currently seeking to change the Japanese constitution that we wrote for them after WWII so that the Japanese can have an offensive navy. Already under the current U.S. imposed criteria they have a very strong Navy. The Vietnamese are practically begging us to allow them to buy more weapons systems and the Phillipines is working on building up their Navy.
The situation in the Western Pacific is not the same as Western Europe. We have credible partners that are more than willing to work with us to help stabilize the region and constrain China's aggressiveness. It is in America and the worlds interests to do this. Do you realize how much trade flows though the South Pacific area?

No doubt “they” want us there. However if the US makes commitments to “them” and finds itself in a shooting war with China, are the American people going to benefit? You would think six thousand dead, tens of thousands more physically and psychologically maimed, close to $6 trillion squandered in Iraq and Afghanistan with little of consequence achieved, would give pause and reflection to those still enthusiastic about even more foreign entanglements.
