In 2018, a civil rights attorney sued the Washington, D.C. government for allegedly discriminatory gentrification policies, claiming that development in Navy Yard area and other parts of southeast D.C. encouraged an influx of affluent “millennial creatives” who displaced minority residents.

That area was pretty sketchy prior to the redevelopment. It was probably best known for the large abandoned warehouses at the foot of the South Capitol Street bridge that had been turned into nightclubs. There was a school bus parking lot, several auto body and glass repair shops, a scattering of other gritty but honest businesses, and if I recall correctly, at one point a trash transfer station of some kind. The whole area -- sandwiched between Buzzard Point, which was industrial, and the Navy Yard, which used to be industrial through the end of WWII -- was commercial/warehousing/light industrial in character. The main housing stock consisted of two story, red brick garden style apartments, which I believe were public housing projects. All of this was quarantined from Capitol Hill by the Southeast-Southwest Freeway, a relic of LBJ's malign plot to destroy America's cities.

I do not regret the loss of this complex at all. There was a period in which I got pretty huffy about DC providing the usual corporate payola subsidies to lure Nats Park to the Waterfront. But by the time the endgame rolled around, the only people who agreed with me were the Cato Institute and the owners of the after hours gay sex club, and I decided that it was time for me to shut up about it. It was a terrible misallocation of space: right along a river and a half mile from the U.S. Capitol. It was an absurd situation.

Yes, some low income people were displaced. From a regional perspective, DC still has a disproportionate share of the area's poor. Keeping a balanced, mixed income housing stock is a legitimate concern, but the big projects need to be closed and the suburbs need to step up. Clean up DC. Move the junkies, gangbangers and professional welfare crowd Montgomery County so the gentry liberals can have their mascots close at hand. A win-win solution.

People who haven't been to DC in many years really do need to check out what has happened along the riverfront. Come to a Nats game some afternoon. Get there early and walk from the Wharf (the southwest/Potomac waterfront) around to the Navy Yard on the Anacostia. It's not far. This is shaping up to be the best location in the entire metro area in which to live, provided you can squeeze into a condo or apartment. If you need a larger single family home, you'll still want to go to BCC, upper Northwest, Capitol Hill, McLean, etc. I won't fault AOC for choosing this neighborhood. It seems to be mostly young professionals moving in, and I frankly don't understand how young people can afford it. But it's a great area.

I wonder why didn't she move to this affordable condo ($30,000) at 20 Chesapeake SE, Washington, DC. 1 Beds 1 Baths 950 Sq ft.

In fairness, 20 Chesapeake St. S.E. would place her on the other side of the river. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. An iron law for sane people moving to DC is to avoid crossing a river on your commute, unless you are a suburban cowboy who wants four to six hours of bonding time with your car every day.

She’s following in the footsteps of her supreme leader, Bernie Sanders. He speaks of hatred for Billionaires, yet he owns 3 homes... His newest acquisition is a $600,000 beachfront residence.

And of course, Michael Moore has to hop on the bandwagon calling for the abolishment of billionaires: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHx5i4GqauI

Lead by example if you are so adamant in your beliefs! Give up 70% of your income and show us how much better the government will make our world.

Did I dream about reading of Congress critters who sleep in their office because they can’t afford a place to live?

Most of them have a family home they have to maintain.

How is AOC able to do it?

Uses her boyfriend's apartment as her "home" place of residence? That way she does not have to rent a place in her district.

Or there might be other reasons.

This chick provides a grand opportunity for someone to Alinskyfy her in 2020. Demographics in the chick’s district suggest getting Primaried though. Golden opportunity for some other dem, especially looking at voting participation in the last several elections.

"I wouldn't wish that on anyone."

Come on, don't get soft. The chick's policies are begging for that. Keep in mind, she would force what you wish against on anybody she does not know. Make these fools live up to their own authoritative measures.

That is actually two separate things from two different sources. Note the white space between the top half and bottom. Found both on the net.

Oh I cannot actually see the first.

Might not be viewable from here, but I really like the various hard-core leaders with her eyes.

Very, very funny.

$11 an hour in 1978 I would have been wealthy beyond my wildest dreams......................

I made 1LT in 1978, and would see my monthly pay more than double in a couple of years, from the princely salary of $666 a month I received as a butterbar.

I was living like a king, though. Of course, I was a single man with no children. Didn't have much free time back then, either.

$11 an hour in 1978 would be equal to $44.30 an hour today!

Here’s the US Bureau of Labor Statistics link:

In 1978 (23 years old) I had been out of the USMC for about a year. I had gotten a job at a Fortune 500 company as an Electronics Tech making $5.75 and hour and I was in Tall Cotton!...................
