NBC Analysis: Racism, not a lack of assimilation, is the real problem facing Latinos in America

The language barrier is terrible in the work place. Something done wrong on the production line cannot be communicated to someone who does not know English. This makes for product damage in the machines and slowdowns on the production line when a procedure has to be ironed out. Imagine having translators to keep the production process going?

That's because the "whites" primary language is English, the language of commerce. Speaking Spanish as a second language helps them communicate with the guy that comes to mow their lawn, who has been here for 15 years and still can't speak English.

A few years ago, I saw a "Discovery Channel" (or similar) show on the construction of some huge ship in South Korean shipyard. The customer was a Norwegian company. Major components were coming from Russia, France, Japan, and maybe one or two other countries.

The official language of the project was English.
