The real dynamic at work here is that the internet served as a tool for organizing - and without it Trump probably couldn’t have won. They are trying to stifle organization by those who won’t be ruled by elites - primarily by stifling honest conversation.
Fake news falls apart when it can be refuted by eyewitnesses, video, etc. - and Wikileaks emails may be broadcast. Imagine if your information was limited to face-to-face contact with people and your TV news (like Red China); that is the ultimate goal.
