If you have ever attended a Black graduation you will understand my reaction.
Whites expect graduations to be somewhat somber events with students, trained and brained, humbly accepting their accolades for a job well done.
Blacks have a different, somewhat more boisterous expectation.
With all the stunts performed both by the graduates and their families, these circuses take forever.
It can be very upsetting to go to commencement and see that Whites and Asians have won all the real academic awards not specifically reserved for certain races.
The Chinese weren’t picking cotton, but they weren’t here on H1B visas, either. I have no doubt that many today consider the work their ancestors were brought here to do, slavery. So, I include them. Human slavery is not wholly defined by “Gone with the Wind”.
The point is, the Blacks need to get over it. They weren’t the first slaves ever in the history of Man and they won’t be the last.
The article doesn’t indicate who pays for these after action ceremonies. If you know something, perhaps you can share it.
If the university pays for these events, then it’s time to test this out by having (as I mentioned earlier), the Italians, Jews, Germans, etc insist on their own ceremonies & request the school pay for it similarly. If the school refuses, litigation is necessary and the school will lose.
I honestly don’t understand why this is a “thing.” If, once graduating officially, groups decide to have their own events, complete with pretending they’re getting their diplomas, etc. it’s not a big deal. They probably also decide on their own...OMG... food & music choices !

Wasn’t there a big kerfluffle about 15-20 years ago about some white students having an unofficial white prom at some school?

Bizarre. Since when does celebrating separately but equally on a public campus even if only on a voluntary basis equate to celebrating diversity. This is a public university. The only qualifier for whether a graduating student can attend this voluntary event is the color of his skin. In my book that is a violation of the equal protection clause as well as the public accommodations laws.
