U.S. Grant did - before he became a Republican.The Republican Party was not founded until just before the 1856 election, Fremont was the party’s first presidential candidate that year. The Republican Party subsumed a lot of Whigs - but if there were slave owning Whigs, they probably wouldn’t have turned Republican when the Whig Party was going under.
