Good morning, E...((HUGS))...you and Gizmo all set to go out and play? Tree stumps? Tall grass? Walking in the water?

Have a wonderful Saturday.

We actually got to hang out at the piers at Comanche Lake yesterday. Gizmo did his usual sniffing at the grass and sou fourth. We had a great time. Going to try to do more activity later today.

"how GI Jive going? Keeping you good and busy?"
Good morning Ma, it's been awhile. ((HUGS to all my Canteen FRiends))!

GI Jams has turned into a monster Kathy. The project consumes much (most) of my time. Besides founder, facilitator, coordinator, administration and press liaison, scheduler, music director, recruiter, promoter and stage manager; I'm also the trouble-shooter, main financier, equipment storage and transportation, loan roadie, assistant Master of Ceremonies, complaint department, photographer and (if I'm lucky) occasional drummer. When I'm not doing any of that, I'm soliciting instrument donations, hanging posters and banners, doing interviews and begging groups like Wounded Warriors, Tunnels to Towers, Rock The Vets and The Gary Sinise Foundation (Lt. Dan Band) for help and support.

I'm also negotiating with YMCA, the Richard Childress RCR NASCAR Museum in Charlotte and the Childress Vineyards & Winery in Lexington for venues outside of the VA. My ultimate goal is to have other VA Hospitals start GI JAMs programs (statewide first and then my dream is to go national). Because of Veterans Administration rules for use of facilities, I can't go non-profit (501 3C) or LLC, so it remains purely an individual volunteer program, but, that's not to say that high muckedy-mucks in the VA haven't noticed and love the positive publicity and most of all, the therapeutic results we've accomplished with Vets and first responders who are injured, ill, suffering from PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, chronic pain, anxiety and a laundry list of other situations. My poster boy is a vet with MS (he has limited use of one hand and his neck, so he shakes a maraca or tambourine and blows a harmonica in a holder around his neck (you can see him in the following video).

I've become personally invested in so many of my vets that it's heartbreaking to see them deteriorate, but to see them leaving all the problem and pain behind while singing and playing has done so much for my own PTSD and depression that I've released my BHIP team (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program), discontinued my meds and only touch base with my therapist via video conference every 6 months.

You know that in the last 25 years they've twice told me I had but a year left, (first with Graves disease and then the cancer) but I've beat all the odds and as long as I draw breath I'll be paying it forward and telling everyone who will listen that 6 different VA Hospitals have repeatedly saved my life and are full of awesome, caring people.

Our next show is Monday, August 5th (1601 Brenner Ave) at the Salisbury, NC, VA Medical Center in the Bldg. 6 auditorium (6PM til). Everyone is welcome on our open mics, its free and kid friendly. Several FReepers have attended over the last two years and you all have an open invitation.

In other news Kathy, I just spent a fantastic month with Mike visiting. He's grown another foot since Spring Break, out weighs me by 20 pounds, his voice dropped two octaves and he eats at least five meals a day. Puberty is in full force! He's 13 yrs-old now and on the Honor Student Council two years running. At 64, I'm as old as I've ever been and somehow thought getting old would take longer.

LOL Pub, I've been growing it since the last cancer surgery (4 years ago). Sometimes I wear braided pig tails like Willie Nelson or do the Steven Tyler thing with side braids. I usually wear hats, headbands or dew rags and when my Hendrix tribute, "Room Full of Mirrors" reunites I may perm it into a 'fro like Mitch Mitchell.

Here in the Phoenix area, I have to wear a baseball cap when going outside or I’ll burn what little is left. The UV is merciless.

A little while ago our FRiend "left that other site" put out a prayer request for Thad, a retired and poor but spirited neighbor who played guitar at a July 4 Blues gig with a really bad foot infection because, well... Thad made a commitment...and the infection got worse.

In response I typed the following which I think also applies to Drumbo and others in this mission...though clearly these aren't DoodleBob's words but from the Holy Spirit:

The heart of a musician is one of God's gifts to the world. "The show must go on" may smack of selfishness. But those who've been in Thad's situation, understand that it's not about them. As Pete Townshend said, “People say, "You've gotta go on, man, otherwise all those kids, they'll be finished, they'll have nothing to live for."

Thad has done his job. Now it is time for us, the audience of the world, who benefit from this love, to follow suit. As lifted from here:

Lord, help this musician who gladdens the hearts of people by filling the air with God's gift of music and reminding them of the divine Musician who created all beauty. Amen.

Oh, Dear Bob, thank you SO much for remembering my friend Thad. He IS getting better, little by little, and I attribute his healing to Our Lord and the multiple prayers of our Fine FReepers. Thank You So Much!!!!

Just wow! Thank you Bob, indeed the show must go on.

Mylife - thanks for 'Hippies and Cowboys'. That's nice. Here's one I love and you may recognize the voice of Men at Work.
