Why this is stupid is that P Bush insinuates that this is a conspiracy of white males. When in fact these people are loners who are mentally disturbed, psychotic, insane. The way this will be fought is through profiling, and unfortunately the FBI using Big Data techniques on broad swathes of the population, taking very deep dives. We don’t need more government in our lives but it is coming, and it will make Obama’s FISA unmasking look like a Cub Scout meeting.
P Bush is being opportunistic here and the facts are not even in yet about the killer. Did he write that manifesto or did someone else? A lot of it sounds like the Unibomber. What is his mental state? Is he deranged? This is not a conspiracy. There are plenty of crazies that push people in front of subway cars or attack cops with hatchets - should the nation be on the look out for them - it doesn’t make any sense. Loner nut jobs are not a conspiracy, yet with guns they are very dangerous. This fight will be of psychological profiling, internet surveillance, education surveillance and potentially medical surveillance. Early warning!
When Muslim terror strikes, and it has been undeniably huge across the planet, there are multiple shooters, husband and wife teams, trainers, bomb makers, drivers, safe houses, rat lines, money trees, spy masters, cadres, spiritual leaders - and it is a real conspiracy with a lot of spy craft. PBush should not conflate these loner white psychopaths (Gabby Giffords shooter, Congress baseball shooter) with a truly organized conspiracy of Islamic terrorism. What is ironic - when Islamic terrorism does strike - no one ever warns ‘Be on the look out for Islamic terrorism’. It is not politically correct, but it very well is a dangerous conspiracy killing people all over the world. San Bernandino, Charlie Hebdo, 9/11 and the list is a mile long.
Why this situation is horrible, and seems to be happening more and more - that there is very little to do to fight it, and yet it is hard to worry, precisely because it is not a conspiracy, but just a psychotic individual with a gun. It is rare, like winning the Negative Powerball Lottery, but it gets huge headlines and massive attention.
Instead law enforcement will need to look out for mental tells, those who have displayed violence, promised violence or committed violence and have access to weapons. This is a mental health issue. It will be about early warning detection, and prevention. It will be about finding and controlling disturbed people
