you describe Drejka as an “old man” he was 48 when this happened.
Because McGlockton initiated physical contact.
As I recall the video showed only Drejka on camera until after the shot was fired and McGlockton was down.
That implies to me that Drejka was not close enough to the woman to pose an immediate physical threat. I also believe that witnesses said that the girlfriend remained in the car until after the shot was fired. That indicates that she was at least somewhat protected by the barrier of the car door from Drejka.
Also there is the difference in size of the two men involved. Drejka was a smaller older man and McGlockton was a large young man. The idea is rather implausible that McGlockton feared Drejka until after the gun was presented.
I do agree with you that many men would feel the need to defend the honor of their girlfriend and their own honor when presented with the verbally abusive Drejka. But that in no way justified McGlockton in laying hands on Drejka.
Giving Drejka a dirty look and driving away was McGlocktons best option. Maybe even a few well-chosen words but violence was not called for. Drejka had not initiated physical contact.
Regardless of age McGlockton was a much larger man.
This whole thing troubles me. In the past, running possibilities through my head, Ive thought of approaching a downed attacker and doing a quick frisk to make sure I wouldnt be shot while retreating. (Why not just retreat? Before she passed, my wife was in a wheelchair for a while. A quick, effective retreat is not always possible.) This situation tells me that if I do such an approach I may be shot as an aggressor. If I dont, I may be shot while retreating.
If I see an attacker drawing a firearm, do I retreat? (How many people on this thread have written that if they draw they are going to shoot?) Or do I try and close with the opponent to keep him from effectively aiming at me, and fight for control of the firearm, in which case I may be labeled as the aggressor?
I have plenty of training, which is why pulling out a gun is the last thing on my list of things to do.
Well said.
“You never shoot to kill, you shoot to stop the threat of death”
You shoot to kill because that is the only certain way of ending the threat. That is why we don’t buy 22s for self-defense. But once the threat is gone, there is no need to “defend”.
If you are being threatened, a 12 gauge to the chest is great. If the other person is running away, then a 22 LR to the back puts you in prison.
Shooting to kill is not wrong. Shooting in retribution instead of defense is.
It’s quite obvious that Drejka was the aggressor. He started the fight. He continued the fight. And he shot the gun even after McGlockton had begun to retreat.
Dreams had just been blind sided and violently assaulted a second before.
I would guess that he was disoriented and we'll may not have seen McGlockton take that small step back.
Also notice the baby mama, supposedly in fear for her life, exits the car when she sees McGlockton approaching.
My guess is she wanted to get in on the action.
You mix politics with the law. That does not change the law, it only demonstrates that not all prosecutors enforce the law equally.
Another good reason for those who carry to me very careful.
If he had put his hands on her in any manner, no matter how slight, then by law she would have been the victim of an assault and her boyfriend would have been justified in pushing Dreijka to the ground.
Remember the case recently where some guy, I believe one of the big name TV talking heads, put his hand on a woman's arm and she charged him with assault? As I recall, the assault claim was later dropped but not until every TV talking head had something to say about it, with the video being run many many times.
So bottom line....no matter how stupid, obnoxious and loud mouthed Dreijka was, the boyfriend committed assault, demonstrating that he also was a hot head.
Whether he was backing away and whether Drejka realized he was backing away were matters for the court to decide, which it did.
All of which emphasizes my original point that those who carry must be very careful to keep a low profile to avoid the risk of being forced to defend in a situation that would have otherwise been resolved without gunfire.
I would like to modify my original post to say that both of these guys were losers that happened to cross paths.
I think a more powerful entity thinks Antifa is and allows them to get away with it.
Here’s the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXp1ILScHYU
You’re right - the girlfriend was sitting in the car.
Drejka was standing outside the car, apparently telling her that she shouldn’t be parked in a handicapped spot.
Then, when McGlockton appeared, the girlfriend got out of the car.
McGlockton shoved Drejka to the ground and stood over him.
Agreed - McGlockton could’ve defended his girlfriend’s “honor” by telling Drejka off. But he chose to assault him instead.
More often than not a man defending his ladys honor is in reality defending his pride.
And as the saying goes: Pride often comes before a fall.
I think McGlockton was defending his pride and he did fall.
His girlfriend bears some blame, too.
First, she was wrong to park in the handicapped spot.
Then, when called out for it, she argued and refused to move.
She had to have known that her boyfriend had a history of arrests for assault and drug offenses.
Another thing about the video that struck me as odd was that it seemed that the Handicapped Parking was pretty far from the door.
Good incite on the girlfriend problem. I don’t think anyone thought about it that way before.
I took never shoot to kill as shoot to wound. Which is 100% incorrect. It was clarified in later posts. Yes, shoot to eliminate the threat. Well, however that happens, happens. All I know is I am aiming center mass.
Agreed, the placement of the handicapped parking spot did seem odd.
This story is sad all around, especially for the children.
Within a few minutes, three adults made a series of decisions that affected so many lives.
I saw the video when that creep got arrested last year and tons of FReepers were up in arms about a legit ‘self-defense’.
He clearly has major mental problems and was looking for a fight since he’d done this several times previously per the owner of the convenience store.
Minding your own business (even jerks who park in handicap spots) will lead to less unnecessary drama in one’s life.
Glad he’s in the slammer.
