I had an uncle who cut lawns into his 80's as a business. Customers would give him used clothing, food, old furniture, etc....

Little known to them he had a business he sold to Russell Stover when he was 50 years old for $27 million. He just hated doing nothing and enjoyed lawn work.

Last month I had my roof replaced at a cost of about $16,000. The estimator was white, and the post-job inspector was white, but the six-man crew who did the actual work were all Hispanic. Only one - the lead man - spoke English.

They worked hard, didn't fool around, got the job done in one long, 12-hour day, and as far as I can tell they did a good job.

I've wondered how much of that $16,000 ended up in their pockets. If they got an average of $60 an hour in salary and benefits (which I kind of doubt), that would be $720 each. Times six, that is $4,320 for the crew. There was probably $3,000-4,000 for cost of materials, which leaves $8,000 or more for management and overhead.

IF there is cheap labor being provided by these immigrants, the end-customer isn't always seeing the benefit - it is being swallowed up by ownership and management.
