I go to youtube and learn how to about a variety of subjects.
Does not cost me anything.
Meanwhile the administrators at the universities are raking in the cash. Big salaries, big pensions. No fear of going to jail accepting bribes to get the parents kids in college either. You get to laugh as the parents go to jail.

My niece used student loan money for a 6-week “class” in Australia.

I never would have DREAMED doing that!

That's precisely what worries them, and what they're trying to avoid.

If

(1) only the people who were qualified for college work went to (4 year) college, and

(2) they had a choice of taking majors that prepared them to earn a living (or leave)

Then we would see MASSIVE reductions in academia, particularly in "social sciences" (the Democrat-activist jobs program)

The more non-college worthy students get sucked into college the more of a farce modern American college becomes. The system might just as well be torn down altogether.

Many of these loans are the faults of high schools particularly guidance departments that push unprepared students with little abilities into college courses community college and programs that they cannot complete. They did this to make their numbers look good. This is the sin of it.

Nothing is particularly wrong with these students, except that they are unprepared or intellectually unable to manage higher level abstraction and information assimilation.

Perhaps they should go to programs that are less demanding or frankly, be street cleaners, maids, janitors, house cleaners, drivers, groundsmen and other non demanding fields that deserve respect.

I suspect that very soon we will be going back to the 1880s and every family will have a helper, a person who will live in and depend on the family for food and shelter.

I paid mine off in two years back in 1987. I worked four different jobs while going to school full-time when I went to college (the first time) and did what I had to do.

My oldest son graduated last May debt free thanks largely to receiving an academic scholarship (33/36 on his ACT) and dad (me) paying the remainder.

It CAN be done, most of today's kids are too lazy to work and view their student loans as "party time" while away at college who then bitch and moan when the bill comes due.

NOT sorry for them.

Deferment is just a stay of execution. The interest keeps accruing. You’re just digging yourself a bigger hole. The government is generous the same way a loan-shark is.
