In a previous life, I scored in the top 1% of their civil service exam and was invited to Foggy Bottom with roughly two dozen other candidates for an interview, including both individual and small group formats.
It was an interesting experience which gave us ample time to review the resumes of the interviewers as well as interact with the other candidates.
I won't go into great detail, but in general, the interviewers all came from the same group of colleges (including Georgetown) and all had previous experience in the media, the Peace Corps or both. There was near zero background from them in hard business or military disciplines.
Roughly one third of the group was hired and the other two-thirds excused, including me. The group hired had backgrounds similar to the interviewers, same colleges, same background in media or the Peace Corps save one token military guy who had served in an embassy position. The group excused all had backgrounds in the hard businesses or military and didn't go to the same group of colleges. I'm sure it was just a coincidence.
