she worked at the base

In some cases that was true.

The mom of Tiger Woods did in fact work as a secretary at JUSMAG in Bangkok, Thailand. I met Tida there when she processed some paper work for me. That was before she married Earl.

Thanks for the history lesson. The point of the first comment I made was that there is no Warsaw Pact or Soviet Union which is the sole reasoning for having NATO. I’m sorry if the comment went over your head.

I agree with you. And yes, I missed the sarcasm tag...

But be prepared for the backlash in this country when the first incident that happens overseas that our presence might have prevented.

And is going to occur in the SCS again and again as they fortify and weaponize reefs, such as Fiery Cross, Subi, and Mischief, etc.

Yep! Bring the boys home. Do the same in the Middle East, Europe, etc. Let the rest of the world solve their own problems.

Don’t negotiate. Just leave. And kick all of the non-citizen Filipinos out of the US.

Did you know there was supposedly a very good production of Alas Babylon on Playhouse 90 shortly after the release of the book? I have tried everything I know of to find it, but can’t. Have you ever seen it?

Pretty much MY initial thought also.

I'm not convinced yet it is the right thing to be promoting though, at this time.

I would prefer an effort to renegotiate the VFA, something President Trump takes pride in hawking as his forte.

I'm married to a Filipina American citizen and I love the Philippines (as a tourist ... not to ex-pat), and I see a LOT of potential for business in the Philippines to a younger man with ideas and the start-up capital.

If President Trump is not interested in re-negotiating the VFA, I disagree with that decision, but still support him as our TWO TERM President.

I have tried to find it. Like you, no luck. Supposedly, there is no known copy, anywhere. Whatever video tape system they had then, if recorded, did not survive.

FReegards marktwain,et al. and I am enjoying this thread very much. Thank you to all who contribute.

The term “isolationist” is, I suppose, pre-loaded with argument that is expected to be persuasive but here it fails, like all name calling, even among those who accept its perjorative connotation. “Isolationist!” “Globalist!” Just as it no longer works to persuade young people with the term “socialist” or “communist” so this term fails to persuade even here on this thread.

Historical argument also usually fails on the multitude of differing circumstances. “The US failed to intervene in WW1…disastrous.” Even if I agree with Leaning Right about that, this is not helping. Let’s start up the “lost cause” civil war thing again. It’s been at least three days right?

The constitutional argument also fails as we devolve into “is too” “is not” “is too” “IS NOT!!”

I am aware that Buchanan has cooties and he probably eats his porridge with sugar, so I promise not to listen to him OK? Anyway is there some specific reason to keep troops in the Phillipines? A person could be a committed globalist and still agree to bypass those islands. There are two suggested arguments on the thread, being (1) the continuing existence of the country of China and (2) the freedom of the seas. Did I miss others?

I am a language maven, so I will enjoy your comments on words and terminology. A clarification of the term “isolationism” will be fascinating to me though I maintain that its use is unpersuasive.

I love, love, love history, and the history of intervention prior to and including WW1 and WW2 is very interesting. I relish any such discussion, though it is completely beside the point here, as is the “lost cause” thing which is always interesting.

I just think we should have a WELCOME presence in the Philippines as an excuse to be able to dock there ... just in case .... China IS continuing to encroach on the Philippines, but Filipino's hate the Chinese and Chinese goods

When we visited in 2018, we made sure EVERYTHING we had and brought for gifts had a "made in USA" ID of SOME kind.

Very few of them comparatively.

Most Filipinos in the USA are FilipinA's, married or working on the marriage/citizenship.

American/Filipina babies are the cutest and IMO, the hardest working people is the Filipino.

Filipino's are not muzzies or mexicans .... for the most part (if not all) they do things by the book and want only (really) to better their life and help Mama and Papa

Extreme family people.

Some of the best looking females I have ever seen were Filipinos. That said terrible things seem to happen when they bear children.

It is correct for Duterte to speak for the Filipino people? Do they really not want us there?

I think it's a mixed bag.

Many American men like small sexual partners and (IMO) the Filipina is some of God's greatest art work.

American military were occasionally caught and charged with sex crimes and not long ago ( 5, 8 yrs ago ?) a case was made national/international and it seems to have been the final straw.

I may have my timeline screwed up, but I remember it was big news and the GI went to prison (I think)

ANYWHERE an American military base sprang up, alcohol and prostitution brought in big money, and big headaches ... in the past.

Things are different these days.

President Duterte is a proud Filipino and a hard ass politician

He came in, not wanting the job, but agreed only if the Filipino people would allow him to clean up the police, the military and the politicians and he, by God, did a bang up job of it too !

Filipino's love Duterte and Duterte won't take any shit from anyone.

If he's fed up with foreigners in his country, he'll (try to) kick 'em out.

I do not believe in Isolation but I also do not believe in Globalism.

I would be more favorable of Globalism if the countries of the globe were more like us from the government standpoint.

But many are outright dictatorships.

Many are outright religious theocracies bent on crushing my religion.

And the people of some countries are plain bigots and ill-tempered psychopaths. I’m looking at you, Dar al-Islam.

Many of the various democracies around the world have hitched their wagons to elite Leftism and that is simply a prelude to dictatorship and even totalitarianism. Others are filled with people who will break any law, step over any other person to get here and I want that prevented or at least moderated to prevent the worst from getting in.

I don’t think a single thing I’m saying here is really opposed by most FReepers.

The world is a DANGEROUS place, and we need to protect ourselves. Let’s not stick our heads in the sand, but also not go out like that preacher in the beginning of the 1950s War of the Worlds offering our hand and amiable friendship to rabid aliens, either.

Finally, let’s not try to buy off every tin horn dictator or wanna-be just to secure another base, too.

The Philippines can pound sand or elect a government that wants to reflect a more mature world view.

I’m fine with this.

Out of the Philippines.

Out of Afghanistan.

Out of Iraq.

Out of Syria.

Out of Korea.

Out of Japan.

Out of Germany.

Out of every sh**hole on earth.

We don’t belong there.

Our children don’t need to die for these worthless a**holes.

Not our circus. Not our monkeys.

We’re not appreciated anyway.

Out.

Last week my Pinay reported there was a big drug bust going on in her home Barangay, in Cebu City. They rounded up a lot of dealers and closed several drug houses. Later a contact in Luzon reported it was happening there too.

Thank you so much for your response and replies on this informative thread!

I want to put your mind at ease and I am sorry if I gave anyone the impression that you are a “globalist” Nobody thinks that! We know you are a patriot and a scholar and a valued member of the FRamily here.

It is a good, interesting point about the communication technology making the world a smaller place.
