Sounds like that dangerous capitalism thing. Better get rid of it.
My wife watches the flipping shows and I humored her a time or two and watched a bit. I only saw parts of a couple episodes and in each one they smashed stuff to pieces with a sledge hammer. While there are times a sledge is needed, removing cabinets is not one of them.
I have watched very many episodes. I got sick of it, so I don’t watch anymore.
It is interesting to compare the costs from various places.
A typical ranch house in California costs around $1,000,000 and a house just like it in Texas is $100,000. AND in Texas you get a huge yard to boot.
In Europe you pay a fortune for a phone booth sized apartment in the city or a fortune for a run down stone villa (farm) in the countryside. You better have CASH because mortgages are almost impossible to get.
Had a friend go one the vacation beach home version of the show. They were not in the market for a house and none of the houses were in their budget anyway. They had actually just moved into their retirement home before the show filmed. Every house they talked about spending $100k here or $80k here to remodel a kitchen or redo a bathroom. It was a total farce.
“My Mom and Dad built their first house in 1969, 3BR 1500sq/ft ranch on a 1/2 acre in rural Iowa for $17k.
Gone are those days.”
Back then the minimum wage was around 1 dollar.
Now it’s around 10 in most places. So a 170,000 home today would be comparable to that house back then.
The median home price in Iowa is about $150k,probably less out in the boonies. So house are relatively cheaper in Iowa today than back then.
How much did they make back then vs what do typical buyers of those homes make today?
Actually you don’t. Just move to flyover country
You have to be millionaires to afford a nice home in a nice neighborhood today.
That depends entirely on where you choose to live and is not necessarily true as a general statement.

I can't make any sense of that.

A lot of people, even people on FR, do not know how different real estate prices are in different areas of the country. I bought a 950 square foot house after my divorce a couple of years ago in preparation for retirement. It is structurally sound with no immediate repairs needed. It sits on a 1.25 acre lot. It cost $55,000. My house payment is pocket change.
Cabinets. Yes thats dumb. I took ours down when we remodeled and hung them in the garage. Site built in the 70s strong as ever. Perfect for storage
Once in a while you will see a flipper wisely remove the cabinets to use in another house, or give to Habitat for Humanity.
Remember when HGTV did a show looking for the next design star? The winner was that fellow, David (he now does the Lottery Dream Home show) and there was sort of a question lingering about whether he was gay or not?
Haha, one needn’t wonder anymore. I tried watching that show a few times in the past year and the guy was so flippin’ flamboyant, I couldn’t take it. Turned the TV completely off just to make sure nothing leaked out of my pixels. Everything is soooo fabulous! The clothes, the wrist action. And the ink? Lydia would be jealous. Very disturbing to watch a seemingly nice guy turn into a gay circus clown. Almost Johnny Weir level...

Loved your description of “David”. Every episode he has so much more ink and he likes to trot around in a tiny white bath towel type robe. EWWWWWW!
Disturbing article worth the read. You can guess what the “H” and the “G” in “TV” stands for (and it ain’t Home and Garden anymore, kids).
You mean we cannot believe the stuff we see on TV??!!??
The median income of all families in 1969 was $9,400 The median household income in America in 2018 was $61,937 according to U.S. Census data.

That's $112,113 in today's dollars
