Needless to say, he is not in China right now as he became friends with Chen Qiu Shi, a Citizen journalist who went to Wuhan to film and report on the REAL status of the Coronavirus ( infection rates and death ).
His friend, together with another Citizen journalist, Fang Bin, have both disappeared. He last spoke to them on an Instant Messaging system. Xu cannot go home as he himself would be a target for disappearance because of his friendship with these journalists.

BTW, the Boxer Rebellion resulted in the "Boxer Protocol," which ended the rebellion, and forced (by Spain, UK, Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, and US) the Chinese (Manchu Dynasty) to pay an indemnity of about $333 million--almost twice China's GDP at the time. So there is a precedent for international action against China
