I don’t know if the 20.9 million estimate is all that accurate but it is likely more accurate than quotes of 4,000 to 5,000, especially considering the extreme response China took to the outbreak from their Wuhan biological lab. Even this high number is not noticable in China and seems mostly anonymous. How many people could die in China (or India) before anyone would notice?

This. Crematoriums don't 'idle', they run when there are bodies to burn. If you could identify existing crematoriums and add in the portable ones China dispersed, measure of time, even account for multiple bodies transited, intelligence could get within 20,000-30,000.

My guess is Wuhan+Hubei 150,000, rest of China 100,000. A nothingburger to the PLA but history will soon label it another modern genocide in CCP's tedious list of outlaw behavior. May God Almighty damn Mao's eternal soul.

Oddly my cell phone usage has increased during this lock down. I can not go to friends homes and relatives. Thus my cell phone use has increased and not decreased. Why has cell phone usage decreased in China unless the cell phone user is dead?

Thankfully in my great state of Texas we are not in total lock down like liberal states. I do go to my best friends house and drink a little whiskey. I do not go in his home. I bring my own ice and mixer and whiskey. We stay a discreet distance apart outside.

ps My wonderful governor of Texas decided liquor stores were essential business. He is a wise man. 26 million angry and armed and sober Texans just might decide to take over the world. WE WOULD WIN! :)

That is an extremely low death rate. It is only 750 deaths per 1,000 people for a hundred years. China is an aging country. I do not believe their life expectancy is 133!

I could believe 14 per 1,000. That would be a life expectancy of about 72 years.

True story... Except that it is also illegal to have multiple cell phone accounts for personal use. I’ve read that the CCP was cracking down on this practice. I don’t pretend to know if it’s true or not.

Didn’t say they were, just pointing out that NYC’s nasty experience is due in part to having similar factors as Wuhan. (NYC’s population density is actually worse than Wuhan’s.)

Their population density figures are a bit on the deceptive side - many Italian (and Euro) towns have everyone crowded into the town center, but then the town is surrounded by tons of farmland that technically are still in the town so the official population density doesn’t look as bad as it effectively is.

If there really were 21 million deaths, that would explain why people in the know were soiling themselves.

However, if there were only thousands of deaths here, why were there millions in China?

In addition to the explanations given in other posts, I would add that the reason we've not had it as bad is our people went right to work coming up with a stopgap method of slowing the infection, which was the anti-malarial drugs, plus zinc. If the Chinese would have been upfront about it, modern scientists could have helped them, too. Instead, they hid it from the world, and suffered for it.

What I don't get, though, is how Wuhan and the rest of the world got it so bad, but apparently it never made it to Beijing.

I wonder if they factored in that among a population of 1.4 billion, the daily death rate in a non-pandemic situation would be quite high, accounting for some of the lost cell phone accounts. My guess is the real death toll is a number around 250 to 500 thousand. Their official number is suspiciously low even for Wuhan and Hubei province alone, let alone what may have spread to other centers of population before they clamped down on internal travel. But I don’t think it’s anywhere near 20 million. Of course, with 1.4 billion, this staggers the imagination, 1% of that is 14 million so that would be equivalent to a death toll of 400,000 in California or 175,000 in metro NYC.
