The western world does not have the same concept as the Oriental Culture of Saving FACE as a total cultural OBSESSION.
Westerners at all levels are perfectly willing to make fools of themselves to no end. From the poorest to the wealthiest. We see it every day.
But, in the Oriental Culture to appear dignified is an obsession. And, as I stated earlier, the higher up the chain you are this need becomes exponential.
And, Xi is at the top of his food chain. So, he is pulling out all the stops to divert any negative association with this virus to His China.

They were unabated in their goals until Donald J. Trump became the U.S. president. President Trump has upset the apple cart, and the Communist Chinese Party decided to deploy an economic bomb on the world with a fast spreading virus. It will eventually become an economic bomb that hurts China more than the U.S., unless the Democrats regain control.

China never should have been admitted into the WTO. Not because of their Saving Face obsession. Which most Oriental Culture is obsessed with. But, because they are a Totalitarian Communist country.
If we exclude the Orient based solely on their Saving Face Culture as you suggest then, we exclude most of the Orient with the exception of Thailand and the Philippines.
These countries are the most tolerant and accepting of outsiders’ culture in the Far East.
The rest would be off-limits if the Saving Face, lying to save face, criteria were to be applied as a precondition to mutual trade and politics.

Good points. But there’s a big difference between ‘looking good’ because you can bully people into believing lies AND ‘looking good’ because you’re a decent human being.
The Chinese style of ‘saving face’ is a form of thuggery - “you WILL believe me or I’ll kill you”...
If that style is common in that region then we shouldn’t trade with them. Period.
This time is was a flawed poorly manufactured bio-weapon - next time it might be one they steal from a rival... or one they accidentally create right. We need to move on - nothing good will come from dealing with psychopaths. They should stay where they are - with their beliefs intact and we need to stay where we are. We tried. They tried. It’s not a go... The sons and daughters of China’s ‘elites’ need to go home. Our cultures are incomparable.
