Headline makes it sound like this was in Mexico City. Nuevo Leon state is a long way from there.

Thank you very much for the clarification.
I lived IN Mexico City for two years. It barely even rained!

Uhm, isn’t this pretty typical? I have a photo of one from a storm years ago. They all looked like this.

I know what that is. Remember those little velcro-like burrs that would stick to your socks after walking through the woods? Well, they were moist, got hoisted up into the clouds and iced up before falling. Yup - plain as day. /s

"Shapes like this are quite common. Hail forming in clouds can melt and refreeze multiple times into many unusual shapes."

I'd guess that a larger volume or surface area vs. mass allows them to stay aloft longer and get larger.

Sorry, mack. We got mud, donkey turd, sand, acid, flatulato del puta, meth factory fumes, spicy Mexican food, and my personal favorite, greenhouse gas.

Appears to be frozen Corona beer.

That is quite a range of third world flavors there.

I will go with spicy Mehican food!

The link I posted discusses the size of hailstones is varied depending on the updraft. A stronger updraft keeps the stones in clouds longer where they continue to get larger until their weight offsets the updraft or the updraft lessens. Water droplets join to the hailstones and freeze on the surface adding to the size.

Me, I’m more a greenhouse gas man, although drowned border hopper does have a pleasant aftertaste.

Could be the cartels fly it over in a small waterwings plane, and for kicks dribble corona out the window while they’re flying underneath the yanqui radar.

Wouldn’t something that large shatter or crack on hitting the ground ? The example pictured seems to show a sculpted “hailstone”,
