I will do my annual listening of the all day D-Day broadcast.
I love just turning out the lights, and imagining I was listening as it happened, not knowing how it would turn out.

June 6 is the anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood in which the US Marines stopped the big German offensive of on the Western Front in the spring of 1918--arguably the turning point of the war. This tune became a hit soon after the Armistice.
Tell It To the Marines--Al Jolson (1919)
Do you remember, Kaiser Bill, about a year ago,
We told your old pal Bernstorff that he'd better pack and go.
You laughed and said America possessed no fighting stuff
Until our fighting Yankee boys walked in and called your bluff.
That Monte Cristo idea will not do.
If you believe the world belongs to you,
Tell that to the Marines,
Those devilish hounds who know what fighting means.
You are going to lick the world, you said you will,
If you mean Uncle Sam, now listen, Kaiser Bill:
Tell that to the Marines, the first to fight in all the fighting scenes,
If you think you'll sink our new boats with your damned old U-boats.
Tell that to the Marines!
That line of Hindenburg's would never break, you made a vow.
It must be made of rubber,Bill, the way it's bending now.
Those Krupp works that you bragged about, you rave of them no more.
We'll change them into bankrupt works when we win the war.
Though Kaiser Bill, at warfare we are new,
If you think now the Yankee drive is through,
Tell that to the Marines,
Those devilish hounds who know what fighting means.
We are going to have six million men in line.
Kaiser Bill, if you don't think they will cross the Rhine.
Tell that to the Marines, the first to fight on all the fighting scenes.
And if you think the Yanks won't swirl in right on into Berlin,
Tell that to the Marines!

The Story from Wiki.....
“The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They’d lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he’d led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home

This was a hit on the other side of the battle line. It's one of my favorite songs from the 1940's.
Glutrote Rosen (shiny red roses)--Rudi Schuricke (1942)
