I didn't realize it existed in the 50s. I assumed it was a Vietnam-era term because I've never heard of it used in any memoir or book from WWII.
That actually would make sense in a Korean War context: many Marines never went to bootcamp. Their training occurred on ship from San Diego to South Korea after they were railed in from all over the states.

I knew several WWII-era MCPOs who used that word frequently, so it’s definitely not just the Marines. Some of those men were in the Navy through Korea and one stayed in through Vietnam, so the usage may have been picked up post-WWII.
Hard to say when they picked it up. A WWII vet could have easily picked it up in the Korean era.

Reminds me of the headline in the newspaper when I first moved to New Mexico, “Gang fight between Hispanics and Mexicans at South High School”. Native New Mexicans back then HATED Mexicans, didn’t identify with them at all. The natives could trace their ancestor back to Spain, Mexicans, the locals called them wetbacks. Still to this day the most racist people I have lived among were native New Mexicans, the only people they hated worse than Mexicans were Blacks, there just weren’t many around to hate on. Today I think it is different, they have been overrun by illegals, and wacko liberals from California and New York.
