The right to self defense was not given by the state, and cannot be taken away by the state. It supersedes all other laws and remains in force even if specifically outlawed by the state, which then acquires complete responsibility for any and all actions that ensue.

I don’t have the training of LEOs either, but, I know about trigger finger and muzzle discipline. I could see this couple getting indicted for brandishing, but, under the circumstances, I could also easily see them getting no-billed for it.

Brings to mind the 2012 Empire State shootings. NYPD shot a gunman and three bystanders at the Empire State Building. Three other bystanders were injured by bullet fragments.
If in fact the mob was on private property, then the mob, waived their rights to not be brandished.
