Phoenix is a terrible location for large scale manufacturing.

But Chandler is a great location for high tech manufacturing.

“On the other hand the addition of 5,000 workers could sway the politics in Travis County towards the right.”

In 2016 Hillary won Travis County by almost a quarter million votes.

5000 is a drop in the bucket.

High tech of only certain kinds - mostly silicon foundries and such - and there’s a scalar limit on that too.

Illegals only have to pay the same rate as in state tuition, same as normal people here. What a deal.

Illegals actually have to prove Texas residency for that. Also, that’s in place only because the Feds mandated it. Foreign citizens legally resident in a state also get in-state rates.

Tesla is too successful to run a scam. Naysayers need to realize Tesla is in fact building a large and rapidly growing set of product lines, that there is sufficient infrastructure to support it most places, and there’s way more money in industrial success than there is in “take the money and run”.

This site is where Tesla will build both an enormous volume of batteries (and has already done so several other places), and plans to build their electric pickup (like it or hate it, there’s hundreds of thousands of pre-orders). The batteries feed the trucks, the trucks commoditize the exotic steel used for extremely successful SpaceX rockets built nearby.

Tesla has multiple battery & EV factories worldwide. Why, or even how, would they run this one as “a giant sized scam” without completely f-ing up the fantastic system they legitimately have?

Consider also that the 5000 are not going to be imported from California but are mostly going to be Texas hires.

On the other hand the addition of 5,000 workers could sway the politics in Travis County towards the right.

The smarter workers will live in Bastrop, Caldwell or Hays counties and stay away from Travis County.

You are correct.

Tesla will have to import some tech staff, but there plenty of highly qualified tech people in Austin.

Musk should have moved it to a county outside of Bexar county next to San Antonio, or outside of Travis county close to Austin. He would have still been able to leverage those workforces and avoided the liberal politics or either city.

Austin is the San Francisco of Texas. Pick a more reputable neighborhood.

This is really bad news. Wish he’d have skipped Texas altogether and gone elsewhere. Austin already has an overwhelming share of liberal geeks.

You are apparently missing the part where almost all of those 5000 will be local hires and not CA imports.
