Not really.
Chinese citizens and their investments are vastly more significant in the Philippines than US ones.

The Philippines has relatively little foreign debt, and little public debt in any case. They really did learn their lesson from the Marcos years.

Thats exactly right.
And its not just uncertainty vis-a-vis the US.
Everybody on the Pacific rim is scared of the Chinese.
But there hasnt yet been any effective anti-China alliance of the powers of the region. Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia are not offering effective assistance or guarantees either.

It's a shame that Abe has to resign. He tried to start the Quadrilateral alliance, which would include the U.S. to defend against China. Now that Abe is going, I don't know if anyone will shepherd it.

China stole the islands during a previous administration, after Obama pressured the obedient president Aquino to ignore them but merely take them to court. So don't blame Duterte.

By the time Duterte was elected, the Chinese had built bases and nothing short of war would kick them out.

So Duterte tried to make nice, but China didn't keep their promises. So yes he was pro China, but the Chinese run the economy so he is being realistic.

Duterte’s feud with the CIA goes way back to when they helped spring an American from jail when he was mayor.

The CIA was backing two candidates, one a politician they could control, the other a woman suspected of CIA ties... Duterte entered the election the last minute and won because ordinary folks knew his reputation...and indeed, despite all the hit pieces against him for killing drug pushers, we are safer.

So, why did he pardon the jailed American marine who killed a Filipino transvestite, Jennifer Laude?

the marine was in physical danger so was pardoned.

The marine took him/her home and then discovered she was a he, and lost it: he beat her but probably didn't intend to kill her. It was not first degree murder but more like third degree murder under the influence of alcohol.

And Duterte probably did it as a favor to Trump.

He hates the CIA, not Americans and not Trump.
